NDSU Overwhelms Northern Colorado to Open Summit League Play, 20-3

GREELEY, Colo. –  The North Dakota State baseball team rolled past Northern Colorado, 20-3, to begin Summit League play at Jackson Field on Friday afternoon.

Jack Simonsen put the Bison (13-8, 1-0 Summit) on the scoreboard in the second frame sending a home run to left center to make the score 1-0. One inning later, Simonsen cracked the game open with a grand slam to left center to extend the lead to 5-0 in the third frame.

Following two runs from Northern Colorado (6-17, 3-1 Summit) in the bottom of the third inning, Peter Brookshaw and Druw Sackett each tacked on home runs to stretch the edge to 7-2 after five. The Bison then put the contest out of reach erupting for a 10-run sixth frame to push the lead up to 17-2. The stanza was highlighted by home runs from both Logan Williams and Will Busch. NDSU went on to win the contest, 20-3, in seven innings.

NDSU's 20 runs were the most in a single game since the Bison registered 20 against Purdue Fort Wayne on May 11, 2019. NDSU also totaled 14 hits as a team, including six home runs. The Bison were one home run shy of tying the single game program record of seven, which was set against Stony Brook in 1998.

Simonsen paced the Bison tying a career-high five RBI and two home runs. He also notched a career-high four runs. Brookshaw went 2-of-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs.

Max Loven (3-1) made the start on the mound going 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. Shea Zetterman closed out the final inning with two strikeouts.
