NDSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The North Dakota State baseball team came up short, 3-2, before picking up a 13-4 win in the series finale against Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.

In game one, Sacramento State (3-1) edged NDSU (1-3), 3-2. The Hornets struck first in the second inning using an RBI ground out to get on the board, 1-0. Jorge Bojorquez kept the momentum going with a home run to left center in the third inning to make the score 2-0.

Will Busch responded for the Bison in the fifth inning smashing an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Sacramento State answered in the bottom half of the frame using a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jeffery Heard to stretch the lead to 3-1. Busch added his third hit of the game with a single to the pitcher in the seventh which allowed Terrell Huggins to get home after a throwing error to pull the Bison within one, 3-2. NDSU wasn't able to get anything going the rest of the way and fell short, 3-2.

Tristen Roehrich (0-1), who made his first start since 2021, picked up the loss and tossed a game-high five strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Joey Danielson finished the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.

The Bison totaled six hits as a team, including a game-best three from Busch.

In game two, NDSU erupted with a season-high 17 hits to pick up a 13-4 win over Sacramento State. After both teams traded runs in the first inning, the Bison pushed across three runs on four hits to open up a 4-1 lead following an RBI single from Huggins in the third frame. The Hornets responded with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the contest, 4-4, after an RBI double from Cesar Valero.

Busch sparked the Bison in the sixth with a solo home run to left field to regain the lead, 5-4. NDSU then cracked the game the open in the seventh inning scoring seven runs on six hits capped off by an RBI double from Peter Brookshaw to make the score 12-4. Davis Hamilton stretched the edge to 13-4 in the eighth with his first career home run. NDSU went on to pick up the 13-4 win.

The Bison connected on 17 hits as a team with six different players contributing at least two. Brookshaw led the way going 4-of-5 at the plate with three RBI, career-high three doubles and two runs. He also added two stolen bases to his stat line.

Parker Puetz made his first career start on the mound and tossed one strikeout over 4.0 innings. Nolan Johnson (1-0) picked up his first career win and threw a team-best four strikeouts over 2.0 innings.

NDSU will be back in action at San Diego State on Friday in the Tony Gwynn Classic. First pitch is set for 8:00 p.m. CT
