HOUSTON, Texas – The North Dakota State baseball team battled back with three-run eighth inning to lock the contest late, but couldn't pull off the comeback in the series finale falling at Houston Christian, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Houston Christian (2-17) pushed across a run in third and one more in the fourth to grab an early 2-0 lead. The Huskies then extended their advantage scoring three runs on four hits in the fifth to make the score 5-0 after William Jewell connected on an RBI single.
Cadyn Schwabe gave the Bison (3-17) energy in the sixth using an RBI single to cut into the deficit, 5-1.
Will Busch continued the momentum into the seventh sending an RBI double into right to pull the Bison within three, 5-2.
Peter Brookshaw then smashed a two-run home run in the eighth inning to cut the deficit down to one, 5-4.
Carson Hake capped off the big frame with an RBI double into right field to tie the game, 5-5. Parker Edwards responded for the Huskies in the bottom half with the use of a sacrifice fly to regain the lead, 6-5. NDSU wasn't able to get anything going in the final inning and dropped the contest, 6-5.
NDSU connected on 14 hits as a team. It marked the third straight game the Bison have tallied 10 or more hits. Brookshaw paced NDSU with a game-high three hits with two RBI and one run.
Tristen Roehrich made the start and tossed a game-high six strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Wyatt Nelson (0-1) picked up the loss after appearing for 1.1 innings on the mound.
NDSU will open Summit League play on Friday at Omaha. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
