NDSU Wrestling Opens Big 12 With Trip to Face Iowa State

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State wrestling returns to the mat after a three-week break from dual competition, heading south to Humboldt, Iowa to take on Iowa State in the first Big 12 dual of the season for both schools. The Bison will face the Cyclones at Humboldt High School with the match set to get underway at 2 p.m.

The Series
The Bison will meet Iowa State for the 10th time in series history on Sunday, with the Cyclones holding a 9-1 lead in the series, including wins in the last five matches. The Bison fell 26-9 in Ames in the last meeting on January 23, 2022. NDSU's lone win in the series came on November 16, 2016 in Fargo, with the Bison upsetting then No. 14 Iowa State 25-16.
Drexler in the Rankings
North Dakota State's Gavin Drexler has moved up a couple places in the rankings in recent weeks. After holding firm at No. 28 in the FloWrestling rankings and No. 32 in the InterMat rankings, Drexler has jumped two spots in both rankings to No. 26 in FloWrestling and No. 30 in the InterMat. Drexler made his debut in both rankings in early November.
Wrapping Last Week
The Bison have been off from duals for three weeks, but had several wrestlers compete last weekend at the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragon Open, with four Bison claiming titles and two more claiming runner-up spots to fellow Bison teammates. Max Petersen made his debut at 157 pounds with three victories, including a 19-4 tech fall in the final. Boeden Greenley claimed the 165-pound title over fellow Bison Luke Barker. Dropping to 184 pounds, redshirt Adam Cherne picked up a fall in the finals match over a South Dakota State opponent. Drew Blackburn-Forst also had a couple pins, including one in the final to win at heavyweight.
Last Time vs Iowa State
North Dakota State fell to No. 10 Iowa State 26-9 at Hilton Coliseum on January 23, 2022. Current senior Bison Kellyn March picked up one of two wins for the Bison on the day, securing a fall and six team points to give NDSU an early lead in the event. In the 133, pound match, March recorded a takedown early in the first period and then converted it into a pin of Ramazan Attasauov at 1:08. Luke Weber claimed the other victory for NDSU with a 2-1 win at 165 pounds.
Up Next
The Bison are back in action next week with a trip to Florida for the Knockout Christmas Classic on Saturday, December 21. NDSU will go up against West Virginia, Campbell and Wisconsin in a quadrangular with three duals beginning at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT. The event will take place at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida just outside of Orlando.
