FARGO, N.D. – Freshman left-handed pitcher Sheamus Ryan made his first career start as the North Dakota State baseball team dropped the series opener against Northern Colorado, 10-4, on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Bison (10-29, 6-13 Summit) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with RBI double from Colten Becker before the Bears (14-33, 11-12 Summit) scored five unanswered runs to steal a 5-1 lead after Jaden Stone delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning.
Blake Timmons attempted to get a late rally going for NDSU with an RBI single up the middle in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-2. However, the Bears then cracked the game open with five runs on four hits in the seventh to push their lead to 10-2 following a two-run single from Stone. Northern Colorado went on to hold off NDSU the rest of the way for the 10-4 win.
The Bison posted eight hits as a team with Chase Womack going 3-of-4 at the plate with one run. It marked his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
NDSU used five pitchers in the contest with Ryan (1-1) making his first career start with two strikeouts and two walks across 5.2 innings. Jack Surdey also made his Bison debut and closed out the final inning.
NDSU will continue their series with Northern Colorado tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
