Kansas Rallies Past North Dakota State in Series Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan.--The Kansas Jayhawks rallied for four runs in the fifth inning and went on to a 10-4 win over North Dakota State in the first of a three-game college baseball series Friday, March 11, at Hoglund Ballpark.
North Dakota State (0-8-1) went ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth when Charles Magedanz homered to left field, and the Bison tacked on two more in the fifth when Kansas starter Mike Zagurski and reliever Kodiak Quick issued back-to-back walks.
KU (14-8) narrowed the gap to 4-2 with a two-run double from Erik Morrison in the bottom of the fifth and catcher Sean Richardson belted a two-run homer to give the Jayhawks the lead for good.
Kole Zimmerman was 2-for-4 for the Bison, and six other players recorded hits. NDSU left 13 runners on base.
Starter Jared Sullivan lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two.
Zagurski finished with six strikeouts and five walks in 4 2/3 innings for the Jayhawks, but did not factor in the decision. Quick was the winner with 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Leadoff hitter John Allman was 3-for-5 for KU and A.J. Van Slyke was 2-for-4 including a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.
