COLUMBIA, Mo.--The Missouri Tigers exploded for two big first innings en route to an 11-1, 21-0 doubleheader sweep of North Dakota State in college baseball Saturday, March 19, at Taylor Stadium. Both games were called in the seventh inning.
Missouri's first three batters singled in the opening game and Tiger shortstop Gary Arndt hit a three-run double as MU sent 11 men to the plate and went ahead 6-0 after one inning of play.
The Tigers (16-4) added two more in the second and tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
North Dakota State's only run came in the top of the sixth when designated hitter Kole Zimmerman hit a one-out double to right center and first baseman Reid Arnold followed with an RBI single into left field.
Bison right fielder Ryan Langlais recorded NDSU's only other hit off MU lefty Nathan Culp, who pitched all seven innings, struck out five, and walked four.
Brandon Goltz worked four innings and took the loss for North Dakota State. Goltz (0-4) allowed nine runs on eight hits, walked four, and struck out three.
The nightcap got uglier faster for NDSU (0-15-1).
Missouri's first eight hitters reached and scored as the Tigers sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning and jumped ahead 12-0.
NDSU starter Ryan Williams lasted only one-third of an inning in his first collegiate start. The freshman allowed 11 runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out one.
Left fielder Tim Erickson, third baseman Charles Magedanz and center fielder Greg Plecki each had base hits for the Bison.
