OMAHA, Neb.--Creighton swept a college baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State on Wednesday, March 23, at the CU Sports Complex. The Bluejays came from behind for a 5-3 win in Game 1 and erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning of the second game for a 12-3 win.
Creighton won its eighth and ninth straight games and improved to 17-5. North Dakota State lost its 10th and 11th straight games and is now 0-18-1 on the season.
The games were the last two of an 11-game, 13-day road trip for the Bison, who are scheduled to host Valley City State on Thursday, March 31.
North Dakota State scored two first-inning runs in the opener. Leadoff hitter Tim Erickson doubled to left field and Charles Magedanz scored him on a triple to left-center. Reid Arnold's single to left-center two batters later scored Magedanz.
Dan Norquist and Zach Daeges led off the Creighton second inning with back-to-back triples, and Gabe Lapito had an RBI groundout to tie the game.
Bison shortstop Matt Mossey hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the NDSU third inning to put the Bison up 3-2, but Creighton scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth for the final margin.
Starting pitcher Shane Bushland went 5 1/3 innings for NDSU and took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out three in his first collegiate start.
Creighton left-hander Scott Reese threw three strong innings of relief for the win and improved to 6-0 for the Bluejays.
NDSU was down 3-0 in the nightcap before tying the game in the fourth inning.
A leadoff walk by Mossey and a Magedanz double lost in the right-field sun set the table. Matt Freudenthal delivered a one-out single through the right side, Brandon Wiebelhaus lofted an RBI single into left-center, and Arnold had a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side before a fly out and strike out left the bases loaded.
Creighton went up 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth and scored seven runs on four hits in the fifth to put the game away.
Neil Wagner made his first start in more than a year for North Dakota State. Wagner worked 4 1/3 innings and was the losing pitcher. He allowed seven runs on six hits, walked four, and struck out two.
Brandon Goltz finished the fifth inning and loaded the bases in the sixth before Pat Thielke came out of the bullpen to get three outs and hold Creighton scoreless.
CU reliever Trevor Benson was the winner with two innings of relief. Bluejay starter Tony Bilek went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out one.
Shortstop Brad Dutton was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead the Creighton attack in the nightcap.
