FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State tied a school record with 24 hits -- 19 of them singles -- and picked up its first win of the college baseball season with a 16-1 triumph over Valley City State on Thursday, March 31, at Newman Outdoor Field.
NDSU snapped an 11-game losing streak and moved its record to 1-18-1. Valley City State dropped to 4-11.
North Dakota State sent 12 men to the plate in its first at-bat, scoring seven runs on five hits and chasing Valley City State starter Michael Fox after two-thirds of an inning.
After Tim Erickson singled and Fox issued back-to-back walks to Matt Mossey and Charles Magedanz, cleanup hitter Kole Zimmerman's two-run single through the left side put the Bison up 2-1. Two batters later, Reid Arnold punched a two-run single into center field to put the Herd up 4-1.
Fox (0-3) left after surrendering five hits, walking two batters and hitting two more. He was charged with seven runs.
North Dakota State starter Neil Wagner settled down to pitch three no-hit innings after surrendering one run on two hits in the first. He struck out eight and walked three in his predetermined four innings and evened his record at 1-1.
Shane Bushland worked four innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts and and Ryan Williams fanned three of the four batters he faced in the ninth to close the game.
Six Bison players recorded multiple hits. Left fielder Ryan Langlais led the way with a 5-for-5 game including a double, sacrifice fly, and two runs scored.
Arnold was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, Mossey was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, and Zimmerman finished 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Matt Freudenthal and Greg Plecki each had a pair of hits.
The crowd of 442 for the home opener was the fifth biggest draw for North Dakota State since the Bison moved into Newman Outdoor Field in 1997.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host North Dakota on Tuesday, April 5, at Newman Outdoor Field. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
UND has been the opponent for NDSU's top three draws in stadium history. It will be the first meeting of the two former North Central Conference rivals since the Bison won an NCC semifinal playoff game from the Sioux a year ago.
