CHARLESTON, Ill.--North Dakota State University played errorless ball and received a pair of steady pitching performances to sweep host Eastern Illinois University by the scores of 2-1 and 7-2 in a women's softball doubleheader played Friday, March 4, at Williams Field.
North Dakota State (4-3), which extended its winning streak to four games, is scheduled to play Butler University (0-3) at 9 a.m. in the opening game of the Wolfe Sycamore Classic hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind.
Allison Bakke, a freshman from Anoka, Minn., tossed a three-hitter, walked one and struck out 10 in the opener. Bakke improved to 3-3 on the season and has 37 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched so far this spring.
The Bison offense struck for single runs in the second and third inning. Sophomore outfielder Erin Troup delivered a two-out, RBI single in the second, while sophomore outfielder Lynnae Foshag belted a double to center to score senior Heather Hyatt from first.
The Panthers (0-2) threatened in the seventh inning. Katy Steele stroked a two-out, run-scoring scoring single up the middle, but Bakke snuffed out the rally by getting the final out on a fly ball.
Freshman first baseman Aimee Enzler had three singles to lead North Dakota State's 10-hit attack, while sophomore third basman Amy Hemingson and Foshag each added two hits.
Eastern Illinois held an 8-7 edge in hits in the nightcap, but NDSU cashed in on five errors to pull away in the second game. The Bison put the game out of reach with a three-run fifth inning highlighted by RBI singles from Enzler and Hemingson, and a suicide squeeze bunt by junior first baseman Courtney Lacock to score Foshag from third.
Enzler and Hemingson each had two hits and a pair of RBI including Enzler's run-scoring triple to left center in the first inning.
Freshman righty Bekki Rasmussen took advantage of the offensive support to pick up her first collegiate pitching win and even her record at 1-1. She walked one and struck out a batter in going the seven-inning distance.
