LINCOLN, Neb.--Nationally ranked Nebraska took both games of a college baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State on Wednesday, April 13, at Haymarket Park.
The Huskers won 12-1 in the seven-inning opener and posted a 10-0 triumph in the nine-inning nightcap, which was shortened to eight by the 10-run rule.
North Dakota State dropped to 2-25-1 heading into a three-game series at South Dakota State on Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17.
Nebraska, ranked 11th in the latest coaches poll and as high as 10th by baseball writers, improved to 29-6 on the year.
NDSU collected seven hits in the opener but fell victim to the ground-ball single in two big Nebraska innings. The Huskers pounded out five runs on four hits in the fourth inning, and followed it with six runs on five hits in the fifth to jump ahead 12-0.
Husker shortstop Ryan Wehrle and third baseman Alex Gordon each hit run-scoring doubles late in the sixth to cap the rally. Those were the only two extra-base hits in the game.
A pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Tyrus Powe scored NDSU's only run in the top of the seventh inning.
Bison starter Terry Tchida worked 3 2/3 innings. He allowed six runs on five hits and walked three in dropping to 0-4 on the year.
The Huskers put together a five-run second inning in the nightcap fueled by five singles to jump ahead.
NU limited the Bison to four hits in the game. Left fielder Matt Freudenthal was 2-for-3 with his fifth double of the season.
Tom Branca pitched six innings in his first start of the season for North Dakota State. Branca allowed eight runs on 12 hits, walked two and struck out two.
Nebraska's bottom four hitters were 9-for-16 with seven runs and five RBIs. Wehrle led that group with a 3-for-4 nightcap including a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
A crowd of 2,011 was on hand for the doubleheader.
