FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State scored eight runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 22-4 victory over Wisconsin-Superior in college baseball Wednesday, April 6, before a crowd of 384 at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State moved its record to 2-19-1 heading into a four-game series at Western Illinois this Saturday and Sunday. Wisconsin-Superior lost its fifth straight to drop to 4-8 overall.
NDSU was ahead 6-0 going into the third inning when shortstop Matt Mossey hit a two-run home run to straightaway right field that put the Herd up 8-0. It was Mossey's second homer of the year and NDSU's third.
Wisconsin-Superior scored all four of its runs off Bison reliever Brandon Goltz in the top of the fifth to pull within 8-4, and the Yellowjackets were threatening for more before leaving the bases loaded. Superior would leave 15 men on base in the game.
NDSU got all four runs back in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on six more in the sixth and four in the eighth for the final margin.
Mossey finished 4-for-4 with two walks, five RBIs and five runs scored.
Nathan Thomas, Kole Zimmerman, and Reid Arnold each had three hits. Zimmerman hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the first and drove in four on the day. Arnold doubled in a run in the eighth and totaled five RBIs. Thomas scored three runs and drove in a pair.
NDSU stranded 11 base runners and still struck out eight times despite the big offensive numbers.
Reed Coil took the loss for Wisconsin-Superior. He worked two innings, allowing six runs on four hits, walking three and fanning one. Yellowjacket reliever Adam West struck out four in two innings of relief.
Bison starter Jake Laber was the winner as NDSU marched seven pitchers into the game. Laber pitched two hitless innings and kept Superior scoreless despite walking three batters. He struck out three, including one to end the first and leave the bases loaded before tossing a 1-2-3 second inning.
NDSU pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts. Ryan Williams struck out three of his six batters in the top of the ninth.
Leadoff center fielder Kevin Ott was 2-for-6 with an RBI double to lead Wisconsin-Superior.
