OMAHA, Neb.--The Creighton Bluejays completed a four-game sweep of North Dakota State in college baseball Sunday, March 18, by winning both ends of a doubleheader 10-6 and 9-8 at the CU Sports Complex.
North Dakota State (2-9) hit five home runs on the day, including a three-run shot by Greg Plecki that capped a five-run fourth inning and brought the Bison back within 7-5 in the nightcap.
It was 8-5 before NDSU rallied for three runs in the sixth. Kole Zimmerman led off with a home run to cut to lead to two before the Bison loaded the bases with back-to-back walks and a one-out single by Matt Mossey.
Luke Otto followed with a single off reliever Andy Masten that scored Ricky Hefflinger and Kenny Beese with the tying runs.
Creighton (12-7) capitalized in the bottom of the sixth when Darin Ruf reached on an infield error with two outs and scored the game-winning run on the next play when the pitcher Masten doubled to left-center.
Mossey pitched 6 2/3 innings for North Dakota State, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits, striking out two and walking none. He dropped to 0-1.
Shannon Ekermans, who homered in both ends of the doubleheader, pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief for Mossey with three strikeouts.
Ekermans hit a three-run blast to cap NDSU's five-run seventh in Game 1 that brought the Bison within 8-6. Two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh provided the final margin for Creighton.
Ekermans, Mossey and Brendan O'Connor each had two hits in the first game. Kenny Beese was the only Bison player with multiple hits in the nightcap. He was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Seth Foley allowed six runs on seven hits over an inning and two-thirds in the opener to drop to 1-2 on the year.
Ryan Langlais was 1-for-4 with a solo homer in the opening game, and he worked 4 1/3 innings of relief in his first collegiate pitching apperance. Langlais allowed two unearned runs and two hits while walking three and striking out two.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play the first of a four-game series at Iowa on Friday, March 23.
