Seven-Run Fourth Carries Iowa Past North Dakota State

IOWA CITY, Iowa--The Iowa Hawkeyes rallied for seven runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat North Dakota State 9-7 in college baseball Sunday, March 25.

Iowa completed a four-game sweep of the Bison and improved to 9-5 overall. North Dakota State lost its 11th straight game and dropped to 2-13 overall.

NDSU shortstop Matt Mossey hit 4-for-5, scored two runs, and drove in two runs with a single in the eighth that made the score 8-7.

Iowa scratched across an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin, and closer Mike Schurz got the final four outs for his second straight save.

Bison right fielder Shannon Ekermans was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and teammates Greg Plecki and Kenny Beese had two hits apiece.

Ben Mathiason took the loss in his first start for NDSU. Mathiason worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three.

Relief pitcher Seth Foley struck out five in 3 2/3 innings of one-run relief to keep the Bison in the game.

Iowa starter David Conroy pitched 5 1/3 innings for his first win of the season. Conroy struck out three and walked two, allowing four runs on seven hits.

Travis Sweet, Dusty Napoleon, Kyle Riffel and Ryan Gryzwa all had two hits for the Hawkeyes.

North Dakota State travels to play Division I independent Texas-Pan American (11-20) in a three-game series beginning Friday, March 30, in Edinburg, Texas.
