Bison Collect Season-High 14 Hits in Doubleheader Split With Valparaiso

FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State knocked out a season-high 14 hits en route to a 12-4 victory over Valparaiso in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field.
Valparaiso's Nick Mazzone threw a complete-game four-hitter to win the nightcap 7-1.
NDSU broke open a 1-1 tie in the first game with a six-run third inning. Five of the runs scored unearned after Valparaiso (9-18) botched two sacrifice bunt attempts by the Bison (4-18).
Valpo came back within 7-4 in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Ryan Mathei, but a two-run single by Greg Plecki was part of a three-run NDSU sixth that put the game away.
Matt Watson and Kenny Beese tacked on run-scoring singles in the seventh and eighth for the final margin as Bison relievers Matt Bowar and Jeff Kyllo combined for three innings of one-hit relief.
Starting pitcher Jake Laber evened his record at 3-3 with the victory. He allowed four runs on 10 hits in six innings, walking four and striking out four.
Plecki and Luke Otto were both 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the opener, and teammate Matt Mossey was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Mossey added two doubles in the second game, and he scored NDSU's only run in the third on a single by Plecki.
Mazzone fanned six and walked only one in going the seven-inning route for Valpo. Zach Rodeghero was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Crookston, Minn., native Colin Reynolds hit his first home run of the season to lead off the third inning and the Valpo designated hitter finished 1-for-4.
The Bison and Crusaders are scheduled to close out the four-game series with another doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
