FARGO, N.D.--Right-hander Matt Mossey struck out five in a complete-game effort to lead North Dakota State to a 9-2 win over Valparaiso in the second game of a college baseball doubleheader Sunday, April 15, at Newman Outdoor Field. Valparaiso won the opener 9-6.
Mossey (1-2) scattered eight hits and walked two over seven innings as the Bison improved to 5-19 on the season. He was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Valparaiso (10-19) scored the first two runs of the second game in the third inning before North Dakota State scratched across four runs in the fourth.
Greg Plecki and Matt Watson delivered back-to-back one-out RBI singles to tie the game, and the Bison went ahead for good one batter later when Plecki and Watson both scored on a wild pitch that Valpo catcher Joe Lazar could not locate.
Watson was 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while teammates Plecki, Gavin Hofer and Luke Otto were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the opener, Hofer's two-out, two-run double highlighted a five-run third inning that put the Bison ahead 5-4. Four of the runs were unearned.
The game was tied at 6 in the top of the seventh before Valpo leadoff man Jeff Rickert drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to go ahead for good.
NDSU right fielder and relief pitcher Shannon Ekermans was 3-for-5, while teammates Hofer, Otto, Mossey and Kole Zimmerman were all 2-for-5.
Valparaiso starter Harvey Yergin struck out five batters in six innings for the win, and Dallas Cawiezell picked up his second save of the year with three scoreless innings.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out its six-game home stand against Minnesota-Duluth on Thursday, April 19. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
