FARGO, N.D.--Matt Sanford's bad-hop single with two outs in the 17th inning plated two runs to spark Southern Utah to a 12-5 victory over North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Saturday, April 12, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Sanford, who hit 1-for-4 after coming on to pinch-run in the ninth, hit a sharp two-hopper that bounded over NDSU second baseman Devin Flynn's head to plate Nick Freitas and Greg Madsen.
A throwing error plated two more runs, and the Bison bullpen issued three bases-loaded walks for the final margin.
Shane Bushland, the second of four NDSU pitchers, took the loss despite striking out 11 batters and allowing only one earned run in 11 1/3 innings. Bushland dropped to 3-2 on the year. He threw 176 pitches.
He was outdueled by SUU right-hander Jacob Noyes, who struck out 18 batters with three walks and three hits over 8 1/3 innings for the win. Noyes improved to 3-1 on the year. He threw 146 pitches.
North Dakota State (6-18, 0-5) had its best chance to win in extra innings when Ryan Langlais doubled with two outs in the 16th. Langlais moved to third when Sebastian Miles reached on an infield error, but Noyes got a strikeout to end the threat.
NDSU led 4-3 after 7 1/2 innings and the Bison tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Mike Germain hit a two-out single to plate Miles for a 5-3 lead.
Southern Utah (15-14, 3-2) tied the game in the ninth when Cameron Nelson reached second on an infield throwing error, moved up on a passed ball, and came in on a Chester Wilson single. Sanford, pinch running after a walk to Bucky Aona, scored the tying run on Jacob Romney's single with one out.
Bushland got two strikeouts to end the ninth, but the Bison left runners at first and second in the bottom of the inning to send it to extras. NDSU put runners at second and third on a wild pitch in the 10th, but Noyes got a strikeout to escape.
Langlais, Miles and Shannon Ekermans each had two hits for NDSU. Langlais had two RBIs, while Miles and Germain each scored twice.
Romney was 3-for-5 for SUU. Freitas, Wilson and Keli'i Zablan each had two hits. Freitas drove in three runs, including his eighth home run of the year to right field on the third pitch of the game.
One day after Centenary and Oral Roberts played 16 innings in The Summit League, this 17-inning affair became the longest game on record at NDSU. It lasted 5 hours, 26 minutes and 607 pitches were thrown.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled. The first game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., did not start until 4:40 p.m. due to wet field conditions.
North Dakota State and Southern Utah are scheduled close out the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday, April 13.
