FARGO, N.D.--Second baseman Tim Jallen was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Jake Laber pitched eight strong innings to lead North Dakota State to a 9-4 victory over Minnesota in college baseball Wednesday, May 7.
North Dakota State improved to 11-26 overall and won the season series two-games-to-one. Minnesota fell to 18-30 overall.
A school-record crowd of 1,079 was on hand at Newman Outdoor Field, breaking the previous mark of 1,019 against Minnesota in 2006.
NDSU bounced back from a 1-0 deficit with a three-run first inning. Jallen and Kyle Harrison started the inning with back-to-back singles before the Bison plated three runs on four infield ground balls.
Minnesota scored again in the second to make it 3-2 before North Dakota State scored four unanswered runs. Chad Berg doubled and scored in the second, and his second double of the game in the third brought in two runs for a 6-2 lead.
A wild pitch scored Shannon Ekermans in the fourth, and the Bison got RBI groundouts from Ekermans and Kole Zimmerman in the fifth and seventh for NDSU's final runs.
Laber allowed two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks to improve to 2-5 on the year. NDSU closer Shane Bushland pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits in a non-save situation.
NDSU outhit Minnesota 16-10 and three Bison players had three hits apiece. Berg finished 3-for-4 and Sebastian Miles was 3-for-5. Ekermans and Zimmerman finished with two RBIs each.
Tom Steidl, Kyle Knudson and Eric Decker each had two hits for Minnesota. Scott Fern, the first of five Minnesota pitchers, allowed six runs on eight hits with one walk in 2 1/3 innings and evened his record at 1-1 with the loss.
North Dakota State is on the road this weekend for a Summit League four-game series at Western Illinois beginning Saturday, May 10.
