Currie Blast, Padilla Shutout Lift Bison Past #9/10 Oklahoma 1-0 At NCAA Softball Regional

Box Score

NORMAN, Okla.--Jackie Currie hit a  towering home run to left and Andi Padilla pitched a two-hit shutout as North Dakota State University upset 7th-seeded Oklahoma 1-0 in 11 innings at the NCAA Division I Softball Regional on Saturday, May 16, at the OU Softball Complex. The game was suspended at 10:08 p.m. Friday and resumed at 11:57 a.m.

The Bison handed the No. 9/10-ranked Sooners their first NCAA Regional loss at Marita Hynes Field. It was NDSU's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in 16 tries since making the move to Division I.

Currie, a senior from Corona, Calif., hit a 1-0 pitch with two outs down the left field line with the softball clearing the fence by at least 60 feet. It was the second home run of the season for Currie, who has fought through assorted injuries during her career.

Padilla, who threw 176 pitches in the 3-hour, 5-minute marathon, flirted with a no-hitter through the first eight innings and retired 13 batters in a row during one stretch. She allowed just two hits over the final three frames against the explosive Sooner offense.

Krystle Huey broke up the no-hitter with an infield single with no outs in the ninth inning. Haley Anderson had the other base hit for OU (41-15), which defeated Arkansas (27-29) by the score of 21-2 in a loser's out game.

Padilla recorded her eighth shutout of the season and improved to 24-10. She walked seven and struck out four.

Again, Padilla received plenty of help from the Bison defense that didn't commit any errors. Kelly Cantrell threw out a baserunner attempting to steal in the first. Brea Konz at third, shortstop Nicole Rivera, second baseman Laurel Pipkin and Melissa Chmielewski at first all turned alert plays during the contest.

D.J. Mathis pitched the first 8.1 innings for Oklahoma. Mathis struck out nine, allowed seven hits and walked one. Allee Allen entered the game in the ninth and worked the final 2.2 frames. Allen allowed the one hit, struck out two and issued no walks.

NDSU outhit the Sooners 8-2. Rivera and Konz each had a pair of singles. The Bison left nine runners on base, while OU stranded eight.
