Hunter, Leathernecks Even Series With 7-3 Win Over Bison

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois scored seven unanswered runs to beat North Dakota State 7-3 in the second game of a Summit League baseball series Saturday, April 14, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
Dustin Hunter pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts for Western Illinois, which improved to 11-19-1 overall and 2-4-0 in The Summit League. NDSU lost for the third time in four games to drop to 23-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.
NDSU starter Luke Anderson struck out a career-high 10 batters but suffered his first loss of the year and dropped to 6-1. Anderson was responsible for six runs, five earned, on eight hits with two walks in 6 1/3 innings.
North Dakota State took a 3-0 lead in the second inning but the Bison advanced only two runners into scoring position the rest of the afternoon.
Wes Satzinger was hit by a pitch to start NDSU's second inning and moved to third on a Nick Anderson single and Tyler Steen bunt before Nick Altavilla's RBI single. Altavilla stole second and scored one out later with Nick Anderson on Tim Colwell's single.
Western Illinois got one run back in the second on back-to-back doubles by Tom Lilja and Steve Kedroski and the Fighting Leathernecks went ahead for good with three runs in the fifth.
Manny Reyes doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Danny Marcuzzo's single to make it 3-2, Marcuzzo moved to third on Dan Dispensa's single and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, and Dispensa scored the go-ahead run from second on an infield error with two outs.
Lilja, Kedroski and Marcuzzo each had two hits for the Leathernecks. Kedroski had three RBIs including a two-run single in the seventh that made it a 6-3 game. Western tacked on another unearned run in the eighth for the final margin.
Nick Anderson was 2-for-4, Zach Wentz extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff third-inning single, and Colwell has reached base safely in 28 straight games after his two-run single.
The start of the game was delayed four hours because of rain and the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was shifted to Sunday, April 15. The teams will play a nine-inning game at 11 a.m. followed by a seven-inning game.
