
North Dakota State Earns Four-Game Split at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. - North Dakota State earned a four-game split of its first Summit League baseball series of the year with a 10-4 win and 3-2 loss at Western Illinois on Sunday, April 15, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
Tim Colwell scored twice, drove in two runs, and tied the NDSU record for hits with a 5-for-5 first game. Bison starter Bryant Larson (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings for the victory.
Western Illinois' Dan Russell and NDSU's Zach Wentz both pitched complete games in the seven-inning finale. Russell (3-2) struck out seven, including five looking, and held the Bison to three hits. Wentz (1-3) gave up nine hits, walked one and fanned two.
NDSU (24-9, 2-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener with Colwell scoring on a wild pitch, Nick Anderson drawing a bases-loaded walk, and Tyler Steen lifting a sacrifice fly.
Western Illinois (12-20-1, 3-5-0) got a two-run double from Ryan Cowhey in the bottom of the first, but NDSU seven unanswered runs to pull away, including the fourth homers of the year for Anderson and Wentz.
Anderson homered in the third, Wentz lifted a sac fly in the fourth, Max Casper hit a two-run double and Colwell hit his ninth triple of the year to make it 8-2 in the seventh. Wentz homered in the eighth and Wes Satzinger singled in a run in the ninth for a 10-2 lead.
In the nightcap, Matt Igara tripled and scored on Steve Kedroski's single in the first inning to knot the game at 1-1, and Igara doubled in Austin Cowen with the winning run in the fifth after Dan Dispensa's solo home run tied it 2-2.
NDSU jumped out to an early lead when Colwell started the game with a double, moved up on a ground ball and scored on Satzinger's two-out single.
The Bison took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Blake Turbak drew a leadoff walk, moved up on John Skrbec's sac bunt, moved to third on Casper's single, and scored on a balk.
North Dakota State plays a non-conference game at South Dakota State on Tuesday, April 17, before hosting Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 18, and returning to league play at home against South Dakota State on Friday, April 20.
