BROOKINGS, S.D. - North Dakota State head baseball coach Tod Brown notched his 100th career victory Tuesday, April 17, with a 6-1 non-conference win over South Dakota State at Erv Huether Field.
Four different NDSU players had two hits apiece and David Ernst pitched four scoreless innings for the win to improve to 2-0. SDSU starter Talon Jumper gave up six runs in four innings and dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
North Dakota State (25-9) got all the runs it needed in the first inning. Tim Colwell walked, moved to second on Nick Colwell's single, stole third and scored on Zach Wentz's infield ground out. Nick Colwell scored on a Wes Satzinger ground ball to make it 2-0.
The Bison tacked on one more run in the second and three in the fourth while keeping South Dakota State (11-20-1) in check with three ground ball double plays in the first four innings.
SDSU finally broke through in the fifth when Eric Danforth hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on Eric Cain's two-out single through the left side of the infield.
North Dakota State's bullpen limited the Jacks to just one hit over the final four innings. Mark Hermes pitched a perfect sixth and seventh, Glenn Parker pitched around a single and walk in the eighth, and Anthony Kliniske tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Bison got their offense from the bottom of the lineup while the Colwells and Wentz - the top three hitters in The Summit League - combined to go just 1-for-14 in the first three spots. Satzinger, Tyler Steen and Max Casper went 2-for-4 and Michael Leach was 2-for-3.
Danforth and Phil Paquette each had two hits for South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits threw four freshmen on the mound with Aaron Klatt, Blake Fiedelman and Ty Walker holding the Bison scoreless over the final five innings.
Brown is just the third NDSU coach to reach the 100-win mark behind Mitch McLeod, who had a 347-322-4 record in 15 seasons from 1993 to 2007, and Jim Pettersen, who was 131-203-3 in eight seasons from 1985 to 1992.
North Dakota State will host South Dakota State for a four-game Summit League series in Fargo beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 21, and the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 22.
South Dakota State hosts North Dakota in a 3 p.m. game Wednesday, April 18. NDSU's home game Wednesday with Dakota Wesleyan was canceled.
