FARGO, N.D. - Zach Wentz's one-out single to left field scored Tim Colwell from second base to give North Dakota State a 3-2 win over South Dakota State in the first of a four-game Summit League baseball series Friday, April 20, at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State (26-9, 3-2 Summit) had just one hit over a span of six innings before Colwell beat out an infield single to third base and moved to second on brother Nick Colwell's infield single to shortstop.
Wentz lined an 0-1 pitch to left field that was fielded on one hop, but outfielder Zach Rhodes' throw to the plate was not in time to catch NDSU's fastest runner.
NDSU closer Kyle Kingsley improved to 3-2 with the win after a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Bison starter John Straka struck out seven with no walks in seven innings and Simon Anderson pitched a scoreless eighth.
SDSU's Shane Kraemer dropped to 0-5 with the loss in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Stephen Bougher allowed two runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts over the first six innings.
NDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Tim Colwell slapped a leadoff single to left and Wes Satzinger drew a two-out walk. Nick Anderson's single through the middle of the infield scored Colwell and Tyler Steen singled in Satzinger from second on the next play.
SDSU (12-21-1, 2-3-0 Summit) got one back in the second when Phil Paquette led off with a single, moved to third on Daniel Telford's double to right field, and scored on Aaron Machbitz's fly ball to center field.
The Jackrabbits tied it in the fifth when Beau Hanowski led off with a single, moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Zach Briggs, and scored on Andrew Melton's safety squeeze bunt ahead of Straka's toss to the plate.
Briggs was 2-for-3 for the Jackrabbits. Tim Colwell finished 3-for-4 and Wentz and Steen had two hits apiece for the Bison.
The series continues with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 21, and the series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, April 22.
