MURRAY, Ky. - Wes Satzinger drove in two runs and David Ernst pitched seven scoreless innings to lead North Dakota State to a 4-1 win at Murray State in the first of a four-game college baseball series Friday, Feb. 28, at Reagan Field.
Ernst (1-0) allowed only three base hits and extended his scoreless streak to 28 innings over his past four starts dating back to last year. He benefitted from three double plays and the Bison (1-3) played their first errorless game in the field. Jay Flaa pitched the final two innings for his first collegiate save.
Satzinger staked NDSU to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he hit his 10th career home run on an 0-2 pitch with two outs. He added an RBI single with two outs in the ninth to finish 2-for-5 at the plate and teammate Jon Hechtner was 2-for-4.
Ernst was on the lead end of a 1-5-2-6 putout between third and home in the bottom of the second to preserve NDSU's 1-0 lead. The Bison got an RBI single from Michael Leach in the fifth after a leadoff walk and wild pitch advanced John Skrbec to second base. NDSU went ahead 3-0 in the sixth when Blake Turbak doubled in Kyle Kleinendorst after a hit-by-pitch.
Murray State got on the board in the eighth when Ty Stetson drew a four-pitch leadoff walk and Pokey Harris drilled a two-out single to center field.
Designated hitter Tyler Lawrence was 2-for-4 with a double for the Thoroughbreds and starting pitcher Sheldon Baxter (0-1) was responsible for three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
The teams are scheduled to play an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader Saturday, March 1, and the series finale is set for noon Sunday, March 2.
