MURRAY, Ky. - Trent Keefer and Trevor Jaunich combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound and Wes Satzinger hit a pair of doubles and scored twice to lead North Dakota State to a 3-2 win at Murray State in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Saturday, March 1, at Reagan Field.
NDSU (2-4) managed just two hits in the nightcap and Murray State (5-5) erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to win 9-0 and avoid a series sweep. Game 4 scheduled for Sunday was canceled due to cold temperatures and a forecasted 100 percent chance of precipitation.
The Bison led 2-0 through 4 1/2 innings of the first of two seven-inning games. Kyle Kleinendorst singled and scored in the second on Nick Altavilla's one-out single, and Satzinger and Kleinendorst hit back-to-back doubles to start the fourth to make it 2-0.
Keefer pitched 4 2/3 innings with six strikeouts before turning it over to Jaunich after a two-out, two-run single by Taylor Mathews that tied it 2-2. Jaunich got a strikeout looking to strand Mathews at second and fanned four of the nine men he faced to get the win and improve to 1-0.
NDSU got the go-ahead run in the sixth when Satzinger hit a one-out double and scored on Blake Turbak's single after a walk to Kleinendorst. The Bison loaded the bases on three walks in the seventh but couldn't get an insurance run.
Murray State pitchers Brock Downey and John Lollar faced just one batter over the minimum in seven innings with Satzinger's two-out single in the fourth being the only blemish. Downey picked off Aiden Hook after a one-out walk in the third and a 4-6-3 double play erased John Skrbec after a one-out single in the fifth.
Downey had five strikeouts in six innings of work to improve to 2-0. Tyler Lawrence, Michael Hargrove and Clay Kelly each had two RBIs for the Thoroughbreds, who sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth. NDSU starter Parker Trewin (0-1) allowed five runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for the loss.
North Dakota State travels to Northern Colorado for a four-game series beginning Friday, March 7.
