GREELEY, Colo. - Kyle Kleinendorst drove in a pair of runs and Tim Colwell scored three times as North Dakota State earned a doubleheader split with an 8-4 win over Northern Colorado in the second game of a college baseball doubleheader Saturday, March 8, at Jackson Field. UNC won the opener 3-1.
Kleinendorst was 3-for-4 and scored twice, Colwell went 3-for-4 with a double and triple, and Nick Altavilla added a pair of hits for the Bison (3-5).
Starting pitcher Trent Keefer (1-1) allowed one run and scattered seven hits over 5 2/3 innings for the win, and Trevor Jaunich tossed the final 3 1/3 innings for his first career save.
Northern Colorado (3-11) stranded 15 runners on base including 10 in scoring position. Colby Harrison and Andrew Coffman combined to go 8-for-10 at the plate in the Bears' loss.
NDSU went ahead for good in the fourth inning with two runs scoring on Andy Wicklund's fielder's choice and throwing error that made it a 3-1 game. The Bison led 5-1 in the seventh after Kleinendorst singled in a run and scored on a wild pitch.
North Dakota State got three big insurance runs in the ninth. Jon Hechtner drove in Colwell after a leadoff triple, which was the school-record 15th triple of Colwell's career. Kleinendorst singled in Hechtner and went all the way to third after an outfield error, and Michael Leach bunted in Kleinendorst for an 8-2 lead.
NDSU led 1-0 in the opener when the leadoff man Colwell got to second on a misplayed bunt, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
UNC tied it in the second when Jensen Park's one-out solo homer broke a streak of 29 1/3 scoreless innings pitched by NDSU starter David Ernst, who fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Northern Colorado got the winning runs in the fifth. Nick Miller led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt before scoring on Ben Netzel's single to make it 2-1. Netzel later scored on a two-out error to make it 3-1.
Ernst allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings of work. Wes Satzinger doubled and Kleinendorst tripled for two of NDSU's four hits.
The four-game series concludes with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. MDT on Sunday, March 9.
