
NDSU Holds Off Late Evansville Rally, Win 9-8

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Evansville Purple Aces put the winning run on first in the ninth, but the North Dakota State baseball team was able to hang on for a 9-8 victory over Evansville in the RussMat Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Main Field Friday, March 14.
The Purple Aces (7-6) came into the ninth trailing by one and were able to put runners on first and second. Evansville's Josh Jyawook came up and forced a 1-2 count, but NDSU's Trevor Jaunich struck Jyawook out looking to finish the game.
The Bison (5-6) were behind through the second inning, before a five-run second with two outs put NDSU ahead for good.
Aiden Hook began the Bison rally by walking and advanced to third on a Tim Colwell single. Jon Hechtner drove in the first NDSU run of the game with a single through the left side. Wes Satzinger was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Kyle Kleinendorst walked to put the Bison up 2-1. Two more runs scored after a throwing error put Blake Turbak on base and Nick Altavilla wrapped up the inning with a RBI single to score Kleinendorst from third.
NDSU held a five-run lead through four innings, but was only up 6-5 heading to the seventh.
The Bison put the game out of reach with three runs in the inning, behind RBI doubles off the bats of Satzinger and Kleinendorst and a RBI single by Turbak.
David Ernst picked up the victory for the Bison and improved his record to 2-1. He went six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Jay Flaa pitched two innings of relief and Jaunich earned his second save of the season.
Colwell led NDSU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Satzinger hit two doubles and Kleinendorst had two RBIs for the Bison.
Evansville starter Jimmy Ward fell to 0-2 after being relieved 2 2/3 innings into the game. Jyawook and Eric McKibban led the Purple Aces with three hits each.
NDSU continues invitational play against LIU Brooklyn at 6 p.m. (ET) Saturday, March 15, at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.
