THIS WEEK: The North Dakota State baseball team begins Summit League play on the road with a pair of doubleheaders against Fort Wayne at 12 p.m. ET on Friday, March 28, at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., and Western Illinois at 12 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb, Ill. The Bison, picked to finish third in the five-team league, are 7-9 overall after splitting a six-game road trip to Florida during spring break last week.
THE SERIES: Friday will be the 27th and 28th meetings between North Dakota State and Fort Wayne dating back to 2006. The Bison hold a 14-12 edge in the series including a four-game sweep in Fargo and a doubleheader split in Fort Wayne last season. ... Sunday will be the 35th and 36th meetings between North Dakota State and Western Illinois. WIU leads the series 20-14 including a four-game sweep in Macomb last year, but the Bison won the final meeting 3-0 in the second round of the Summit League tournament.
ABOUT FORT WAYNE: The Mastodons are 5-15 heading into a Wednesday night game at Purdue. IPFW played a three-game series at Eastern Illinois last weekend winning the middle game 14-3 but dropping the opener 10-5 and the finale 15-8. Summit League Player of the Week Greg Kaiser, a sophomore second baseman, leads the Mastodons with a .425 batting average and .950 slugging percentage including six home runs and a team-high 16 RBIs. He went 9-for-13 (.692) with two homers and 10 RBIs in last weekend's series at Eastern Illinois. Sophomore outfielder Brandon Soat is hitting .396 and senior infielder Kristian Gayday is hitting .382 with a team-high six doubles, eight home runs and 17 runs scored. Head coach Bobby Pierce (New Mexico State, 2002) has a 90-197 record in his sixth season at IPFW and he is 145-251 in his ninth year overall.
ABOUT WESTERN ILLINOIS: The Fighting Leathernecks are 2-15 overall heading into Friday's league-opening doubleheader against South Dakota State. Western Illinois beat Butler 11-2 in the first game of last weekend's three-game series and also beat NDSU opponent Evansville 12-1 earlier this month between a pair of 1-0 losses. WIU is last in the league with a .209 team batting average led by junior infielder Brent Turner, who is hitting .286 with three extra-base hits and six RBIs. All-Summit League starting pitcher Aaron Michel is 1-3 with a 2.97 ERA in five starts with opponents hitting just .219 against him in 30 1/3 innings. Head coach Ryan Brownlee (Evansville, 1997) has a 21-52 record in his second season.
BISON SPLIT IN FLORIDA: North Dakota State went 3-3 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on its annual spring break trip, which wrapped up last week. Kyle Kleinendorst led the team with a .435 batting average and Tim Colwell hit safely in all six games with a .423 average. Starting pitchers David Ernst, Parker Trewin and Trent Keefer each picked up wins. North Dakota State has gone 24-20 in Florida over the past six seasons.
WEEKLY HONORS: North Dakota State has three Summit League award winners this season. Kyle Kleinendorst was named co-Player of the Week after going 7-for-12 (.583) with three triples, two RBIs and five runs scored in a four-game series at Northern Colorado. Wes Satzinger was co-Player of the Week after hitting 5-for-11 (.455) in three games at Murray State, where he homered and drove in two runs in a 4-1 win Friday and doubled twice with two runs scored in a 3-2 win Sunday. David Ernst was named Pitcher of the Week after allowing just three singles in seven scoreless innings in the 4-1 win at Murray State.
LEAGUE LEADERS: North Dakota State has three players among the Summit League hitting leaders entering league play. Kyle Kleinendorst leads the league with a .407 batting average, .529 on-base percentage and four triples, Tim Colwell is eighth in hitting (.338) and second in triples (3), and Wes Satzinger is ninth in hitting (.328), fourth in slugging (.534) and first in doubles (9). On the mound, David Ernst is second in the league in ERA (1.69) third in innings pitched (32.0), and Parker Trewin is eighth in ERA (3.05) and fourth in strikeouts (21).
RECORD CHASE: North Dakota State seniors Tim Colwell and Wes Satzinger continue to move up the Bison career record lists in several categories. Colwell ranks fourth in total bases (310), third in at-bats (694) and runs (143), second in hits (237) and has already owns the triples record (17). Satzinger ranks second in doubles (49), sixth in at-bats (606) and sac bunts (14), seventh in hits (186), and defensively is fourth in assists (369). Both players are tied for the career lead in sac flies (10).
PAIR OF HEARTBREAKERS: Southern California needed a pair of walk-off victories to sweep a three-game series from North Dakota State on opening weekend in Los Angeles. The Trojans were down to their last strike in the opener before Timmy Robinson's single scored two runs for a 3-2 victory Friday. USC won 9-0 on Saturday before getting a three-run walk-off homer in the 12th inning from Omar Cotto Lozada to win 5-3 on Sunday.
SCORELESS STREAK: Starting pitcher David Ernst had a streak of 29 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings snapped March 8. Ernst pitched seven scoreless innings each of his first two starts at Southern California and Murray State before a one-out homer in the second at Northern Colorado. He pitched a two-hit shutout against Western Illinois in last year's Summit League tournament and blanked Fort Wayne the final five innings of his last regular season appearance of 2013.
PRESEASON PICKS: North Dakota State was picked third in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's five head coaches. Defending regular season champion Omaha was first, tournament champion South Dakota State was second, Western Illinois fourth and Fort Wayne fifth. NDSU, with 8 of 9 starters back from last year's 26-27 team, was picked as Baseball America's team to beat in its Summit League preview.
FOUR STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASONS: North Dakota State has reached the 20-win mark four straight seasons and qualified for three straight Summit League tournaments reaching the championship game each of the past two years. This is NDSU's seventh season in The Summit League after three seasons as a Division I independent. The Summit League tournament is scheduled for May 22-24 at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The four-team double-elimination tournament will not include Omaha, which is reclassifying from Division II and not eligible for postseason play in baseball until 2016.
THE COACH: North Dakota State head coach Tod Brown (Arizona, 1994) is in his seventh season with a 148-176 record, the second most wins in school history. Brown previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons at Bowling Green, where he was part of two division titles and a regular-season title in the Mid-American Conference. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1999 as a volunteer assistant at Arizona. He was a left-handed pitcher for the Wildcats under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Kindall and a member of the 1992 Pac-10 champs.
