WESTFIELD, Ind. - North Dakota State opened the Summit League baseball schedule Friday, March 28, dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Fort Wayne 8-2 and 3-2 at Grand Park.

Wes Satzinger was 2-for-3 with a double and Nick Altavilla went 2-for-3 with a two-run single for North Dakota State (7-11, 0-2 Summit) in the opener. Tim Colwell was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the nightcap, his first this season and the third of his career.

NDSU starter David Ernst (2-2) took the loss in Game 1 allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with six walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Game 2 starter Trent Keefer (2-3) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in the loss.

Greg Kaiser was 3-for-3 with five RBIs in the opener for IPFW, including a three-run triple to cap a four-run first inning after a leadoff walk and double play. Kaiser tripled in another run in the third and the Mastodons went up 7-0 in the fifth.

IPFW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game with single runs in the first and second innings. Colwell's homer tied in the sixth after a leadoff walk to Andy Wicklund, but the Dons answered with the eventual winning run in the bottom half when Shane Trevino walked and scored unearned two batters later on a sac bunt throwing error.

Ryan Wells struck out seven NDSU hitters over six innings in the opener and improved to 1-0 with the victory. Dane Davis (1-2) fanned four in six innings of work in the nightcap. Zach Mishler notched his first save with a scoreless eighth and ninth. He got a ground ball double play in the eighth to leave two runners in scoring position after a Jon Hechtner single and a double by Satzinger.

North Dakota State is scheduled to play a noon doubleheader at Western Illinois on Sunday, March 30. The Fighting Leathernecks were 2-15 heading into Friday's home doubleheader with South Dakota State.
