SETTING THE SCENE: The North Dakota State baseball team will welcome Summit League rival South Dakota State to Newman Outdoor Field for the final home series of the season Thursday, May 15, through Saturday, May 17. The Bison and Jackrabbits will open the four-game series with a single game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday before playing a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m. The series finale and NDSU Senior Day will be Saturday with a single game scheduled for 1 p.m.

THE SERIES: The four-game series against the Jacks will be meetings 156-159 in the all-time series that dates back to 1956. NDSU trails SDSU in the series, 55-100. The Bison and Jacks were originally scheduled to play a pair of games in Brookings on April 4, but the games were canceled due to inclement weather. Last season the Bison went 3-5 against SDSU, splitting a four-game series in Brookings April 5-7, and Fargo May 14, before falling to the Jackrabbits in The Summit League tournament May 26, 2-0 and 1-0.
THE OPPONENT: South Dakota State enters the four-game series with the Bison with an overall record of 25-25 and a Summit League mark of 9-9 after splitting a four-game set with Western Illinois last weekend in Brookings. Leading the Jackrabbit offense is Aaron Machbitz, who is hitting .316 (59-187) with 31 RBI, 12 doubles and seven home runs. Scott Splett has a .304 (59-194) batting average with 10 doubles, three homers and a triple to go along with six stolen bases in 10 attempts. Splett has also drawn 25 walks in 50 games. On the bases, Zach Coppola is 9-for-11 in stolen base attempts. On the mound, Adam Bray has a team-and Summit League-low 2.49 ERA and is 5-5 in 13 appearances and 13 starts for the Jacks. He has allowed 25 earned runs on 90 hits in 90.1 IP (league-high) with 84 strikeouts (league-high) and 13 walks. Chris Anderson is 1-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 12 appearances and 12 starts with 52 strikeouts and 18 walks in 75.1 innings of work. Anderson has allowed 21 earned runs on 75 hits. Chad Hodges has a 3.15 ERA and a 6-5 record in 12 appearances and 12 starts for SDSU. He has allowed 23 earned runs on 33 hits in 65.2 IP and struck out 40 and walked 21. Ryan Froom is 2-1 overall with a 2.70 ERA in five appearances and two starts for SDSU. He has allowed five earned runs on 12 hits, striking out four and walking three. As a team, the Jackrabbits are hitting .271 (league-low) but have a team ERA of 3.73 (league-best).
WEEKLY HONORS: North Dakota State has seven Summit League award winners this season. Kyle Kleinendorst earned his second Player of the Week award after going 9-of-20 (.450) with 11 RBI, eight runs scored, three homers, a double, two walks and a sacrifice fly the week of April 28 - May 4. Parker Trewin was named co-Pitcher of the Week, his second Pitcher of the Week award this season, after tossing an eight inning complete game shutout at Fort Wayne May 3 with seven strikeouts and only one walk while surrendering five hits in the 12-0 NDSU win. Tim Colwell was named co-Player of the Week after going 11-for-16 (.688) with three doubles, four runs-scored and one stolen base in a four-game series against Western Illinois April 18-20. Kleinendorst earned his first Player of the Week award of 2014 when he was named co-Player of the Week after going 7-for-12 (.583) with three triples, two RBIs and five runs scored in a four-game series at Northern Colorado March 7-9. Wes Satzinger was co-Player of the Week after hitting 5-for-11 (.455) in three games at Murray State, where he homered and drove in two runs in a 4-1 win Friday, Feb. 28, and doubled twice with two runs scored in a 3-2 win Saturday, March 1. David Ernst was named Pitcher of the Week after allowing just three singles in seven scoreless innings in the 4-1 win at Murray State. Trewin picked up his inaugural Pitcher of the Week honor after pitching seven innings and striking out a career-best 10 batters with one walk and five hits in the Bison's 13-1 win over Maine March 16.
CATCHING UP WITH THE BISON: Entering the four-game Summit League series against South Dakota State, the Bison are 20-22 overall and 8-10 in league action after sweeping Winnipeg (Canada) in a three-game set last weekend in Fargo. Tim Colwell leads the Bison in batting average (.392), at bats (166), hits (65), total bases (84) and stolen bases (17-of-22). He is also tied for the team lead in triples with four. Colwell also leads The Summit League in batting average and is tied for the league lead in triples. Wes Satzinger is hitting .363 with a team-high 17 doubles on 49 hits in 135 at bats. Satzinger is second on the team in RBI with 28 and hit his first triple of the season in NDSU's 18-2 thrashing of Winnipeg Sunday, May 11. Kyle Kleinendorst is hitting .319 with a team-high three home runs and 36 RBI with 46 hits in 144 at bats. He also is tied for the team and Summit League lead with four triples. Kleinendorst has also drawn a team-best 24 walks and has 10 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He also leads the Bison with 318 putouts in the field. On the mound, Parker Trewin has a team-best 2.50 ERA with a 6-1 record in 11 appearances and 10 starts. He has pitched 57.2 innings, allowing 49 hits and 16 earned runs with a team-high 52 strikeouts and only 21 walks. His ERA of 2.50 is second-best in The Summit League, trailing only Adam Bray of SDSU (2.49 ERA). Trewin is limiting opposing hitters to .236 hitting. David Ernst is 3-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 12 appearances and 12 starts for the Bison. He has a team-best three complete games in 72.1 innings of work. Ernst has allowed 82 hits and 33 earned runs while striking out 30 and walking 22. Trent Keefer has a 5.68 ERA and is 4-4 on the mound in 12 appearances and 11 starts. He has pitched 50.2 innings, allowing 73 hits and 32 earned runs with 48 strikeouts and 24 walks. Reed Pfannenstein is 2-1 overall with a 4.40 ERA in 11 appearances and four starts for NDSU. He has allowed 14 earned runs and 20 hits in 28.2 innings of work. Pfannenstein has walked 15 and struck out 16 while holding opposing batters to a .271 average. Relief pitcher Trevor Jaunich has pitched 23.1 innings and has a team-high five saves with a 3.47 ERA. Jaunich has only allowed 21 hits and nine earned runs, striking out 25 and walking just 17 batters.
158 AND COUNTING: North Dakota State senior Tim Colwell has started in 158 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season in 2011, ranking him among the national leaders in consecutive games-started. He has started all 42 games this season, 53 games in 2013, 60 in 2012 and made 44 starts out of 47 contests in 2011.
COLWELL SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Tim Colwell was one of 10 NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the diamond selected Wednesday, April 30, as a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series® in June.
RECORD CHASE: North Dakota State seniors Tim Colwell and Wes Satzinger continue to move up the Bison career record lists in several categories. Colwell is the all-time career leader in hits (280), stolen bases (50), stolen base attempts (65) and triples (18) and is second in at bats (795) and runs scored (166) and sacrifice flies (10). The Shoreview, Minn., native ranks third in games played (202), games started (199) and total bases (364). Satzinger is the career leader in sacrifice flies (11) and ranks second in doubles (57), third in hits (216), fourth in at-bats (683), eighth in sac bunts (14), and defensively is fourth in assists (399).
COLWELL TABBED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: Tim Colwell was voted to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first-team, announced Thursday, May 1. This is the third Academic All-District honor of his career. Colwell leads the Bison and The Summit League in batting average, hitting .392, and is tied for the team and league lead in triples with four. He owns the NDSU career records for triples (18), hits (280), stolen bases (50) and stolen base attempts (65) and is second in at bats (795), sacrifice flies (10) and runs scored (166). A zoology major and Spanish minor, Colwell has a perfect 4.00 grade-point-average and is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America first-team selection. He has been selected to The Summit League Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence, Academic All-League and Distinguished Scholar list each year possible. He is also one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award. With his first-team selection, Colwell advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
PRESEASON PICKS: North Dakota State was picked third in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's five head coaches. Defending regular season champion Omaha was first, tournament champion South Dakota State was second, Western Illinois fourth and Fort Wayne fifth. NDSU, with 8 of 9 starters back from last year's 26-27 team, was picked as Baseball America's team to beat in its Summit League preview.
FIVE STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASONS: North Dakota State has reached the 20-win mark five straight seasons and qualified for four straight Summit League tournaments reaching the championship game each of the past two years. This is NDSU's seventh season in The Summit League after three seasons as a Division I independent. The Summit League Baseball Championship presented by First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard is scheduled for May 22-24 at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The four-team double-elimination tournament will not include Omaha, which is reclassifying from Division II and not eligible for postseason play in baseball until 2016.
THE COACH: North Dakota State head coach Tod Brown (Arizona, 1994) is in his seventh season with a 161-189 record, the second most wins in school history. Brown previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons at Bowling Green, where he was part of two division titles and a regular-season title in the Mid-American Conference. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1999 as a volunteer assistant at Arizona. He was a left-handed pitcher for the Wildcats under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Kindall and a member of the 1992 Pac-10 champs.
