SETTING THE SCENE: The NDSU baseball team will travel to rival North Dakota on Wednesday, May 7, for a single game at 6 p.m. from Kraft Memorial Field in Grand Forks before returning home to Newman Outdoor Field Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, for a three-game series against Winnipeg (Canada). The Bison will play a doubleheader with Winnipeg Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. before playing a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday to close out the series.

THE SERIES: North Dakota - Wednesday's showdown at UND will be the 177th meeting all-time dating back to 1910. The Bison trail UND in the series, 77-98-1. The Bison played North Dakota last Tuesday, April 29 at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo and fell, 4-3. Winnipeg - The three game series with the Wesmen will be the second, third and fourth meetings in the all-time series. NDSU won the lone meeting with Winnipeg last season, 7-6, in Fargo.
THE OPPONENTS: North Dakota - UND enters Wednesday's game with an overall record of 9-23 and is 8-10 in WAC play after dropping three games at Texas-Pan American last weekend. Jeff Campbell, who is hitting .256 with 31 hits, leads the North Dakota offense with a team-high 23 RBI and five home runs in 121 at bats. Taylor Petersen is hitting .279 with 34 hits in 122 at bats and has a team-high 12 doubles to go along with 21 RBI. Ryan Reese is hitting a team-best .310 and has drawn 18 walks in 30 games. On the mound, Andrew Thome is 2-5 with a 5.72 ERA in 11 appearances and eight starts. He has allowed 65 hits and 32 earned runs in 50.1 innings pitched with 32 strikeouts and 23 walks. Zack Muckenhirn is 2-3 with a 3.07 ERA in nine starts and appearances. He has given up 46 hits and 19 earned runs in 55.2 innings of work with 43 strikeouts and 28 walks. Jeff Campbell has a 3-5 record with an ERA of 5.77 in nine appearances and eight starts. He has surrendered 72 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 28 and walking 15. As a team, North Dakota is hitting .255 and has a team ERA of 5.56. Winnipeg - The Wesmen, out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, enter the three-game weekend series with the Bison at 5-33 overall. The three games at NDSU will mark the final games of the season for Winnipeg.
WEEKLY HONORS: North Dakota State has seven Summit League award winners this season. Kyle Kleinendorst earned his second Player of the Week award after going 9-of-20 (.450) with 11 RBI, eight runs scored, three homers, a double, two walks and a sacrifice fly the week of April 28 - May 4. Parker Trewin was named co-Pitcher of the Week, his second Pitcher of the Week award this season, after tossing an eight inning complete game shutout at Fort Wayne May 3 with seven strikeouts and only one walk while surrendering five hits in the 12-0 NDSU win. Tim Colwell was named co-Player of the Week after going 11-for-16 (.688) with three doubles, four runs-scored and one stolen base in a four-game series against Western Illinois April 18-20. Kleinendorst earned his first Player of the Week award of 2014 when he was named co-Player of the Week after going 7-for-12 (.583) with three triples, two RBIs and five runs scored in a four-game series at Northern Colorado March 7-9. Wes Satzinger was co-Player of the Week after hitting 5-for-11 (.455) in three games at Murray State, where he homered and drove in two runs in a 4-1 win Friday, Feb. 28, and doubled twice with two runs scored in a 3-2 win Saturday, March 1. David Ernst was named Pitcher of the Week after allowing just three singles in seven scoreless innings in the 4-1 win at Murray State. Trewin picked up his inaugural Pitcher of the Week honor after pitching seven innings and striking out a career-best 10 batters with one walk and five hits in the Bison's 13-1 win over Maine March 16.
CATCHING UP WITH THE BISON: Entering the week, the Bison are 17-21 overall and 8-10 in Summit League play after splitting a four-game league series at Fort Wayne last weekend. Tim Colwell leads NDSU and The Summit League in batting average (.397) and is tied for the lead in triples (4). Colwell also leads the team in at bats (151), hits (60), total bases (79) and stolen bases (14-18). He is currently on a 15 game hitting streak and a 21 game on-base streak. Kyle Kleinendorst, who is hitting .323, is tied for the team-and league-lead in triples with four and leads the Bison in home runs (3), RBI (31), and runs scored (35). He has also drawn a team-high 23 walks. Wes Satzinger is hitting .369 with a team-high 17 doubles to go along with 24 RBI, two homers and a team-best slugging percentage of .557. On the mound, Parker Trewin is 5-1 with a team-leading ERA of 2.56 in 10 appearances and nine starts. He has pitched two complete games with one shutout in 52.2 innings pitched. Trewin has allowed 45 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out a team-high 45 batters and walking only 20. David Ernst is 3-3 with an ERA of 4.01 in 11 starts. He has a team-high three complete games in 67.1 innings of work. Ernst has allowed 72 hits and 30 earned runs while striking out 29 and walking 22. Trent Keefer is 3-4 with a 6.45 ERA in 11 appearances and 10 starts. He has allowed 67 hits and 32 earned runs in 44.2 innings pitched with 42 strikeouts and 24 walks. Reliever Trevor Jaunich has a team-best five saves in 22.2 innings of work. As a team, the Bison are hitting .268 and have a team ERA of 5.06.
154 AND COUNTING: North Dakota State senior Tim Colwell has started in 154 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season in 2011, ranking him among the national leaders in consecutive games-started. He has started all 38 games this season, 53 games in 2013, 60 in 2012 and made 44 starts out of 47 contests in 2011.
COLWELL SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Tim Colwell was one of 10 NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the diamond selected Wednesday, April 30, as a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series® in June.
RECORD CHASE: North Dakota State seniors Tim Colwell and Wes Satzinger continue to move up the Bison career record lists in several categories. Colwell ranks second in at-bats (780) and runs-scored (161), third in total bases (359), and already owns the record for triples (18) and hits (275). Satzinger ranks second in doubles (57), fourth in hits (212), fifth in at-bats (670), eighth in sac bunts (14), and defensively is fourth in assists (399). Both players are tied for the career lead in sac flies (10).
COLWELL TABBED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: Tim Colwell was voted to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first-team, announced Thursday, May 1. This is the third Academic All-District honor of his career.
Colwell leads the Bison and The Summit League in batting average, hitting .397, and is tied for the team and league lead in triples with four. He owns the NDSU career record for triples (18) and hits (275) and is second in at bats (780) and runs scored (161).
A zoology major and Spanish minor, Colwell has a perfect 4.00 grade-point-average and is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America first-team selection. He has been selected to The Summit League Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence, Academic All-League and Distinguished Scholar list each year possible. He is also one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award.
With his first-team selection, Colwell advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
PRESEASON PICKS: North Dakota State was picked third in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's five head coaches. Defending regular season champion Omaha was first, tournament champion South Dakota State was second, Western Illinois fourth and Fort Wayne fifth. NDSU, with 8 of 9 starters back from last year's 26-27 team, was picked as Baseball America's team to beat in its Summit League preview.
FOUR STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASONS: North Dakota State has reached the 20-win mark four straight seasons and qualified for three straight Summit League tournaments reaching the championship game each of the past two years. This is NDSU's seventh season in The Summit League after three seasons as a Division I independent. The Summit League tournament is scheduled for May 22-24 at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The four-team double-elimination tournament will not include Omaha, which is reclassifying from Division II and not eligible for postseason play in baseball until 2016.
THE COACH: North Dakota State head coach Tod Brown (Arizona, 1994) is in his seventh season with a 158-188 record, the second most wins in school history. Brown previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons at Bowling Green, where he was part of two division titles and a regular-season title in the Mid-American Conference. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1999 as a volunteer assistant at Arizona. He was a left-handed pitcher for the Wildcats under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Kindall and a member of the 1992 Pac-10 champs.
