GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team (17-22) suffered a 3-2 loss at North Dakota (10-23) Wednesday, May 7, at Kraft Memorial Field in Grand Forks.

Michael Leach went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Bison offense while Andy Wicklund recorded two hits. Nick Altavilla and Paul Funk each tallied an RBI for NDSU.

David Ernst took the loss on the mound for North Dakota State after allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in five innings to fall to 3-4 on the season.

Taylor Petersen went 3-for-4 for UND with an RBI and home run while Daniel Lockhart hit 2-for-4 and recorded two runs batted in and a homer for North Dakota.

UND's Ellery Bresnahan pitched three innings in relief and picked up the win to improve to 1-1 overall.

The Bison struggled getting runners home throughout the game, stranding 11 runners on base compared to only eight by North Dakota.

The Bison took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Kyle Kleinendorst doubled to right center and Altavilla singled up the middle, scoring Kleinendorst. A Paul Funk RBI ground out allowed Altavilla to cross the plate for the Bison's second run of the inning.

UND cut the Bison lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third after Petersen sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Lockhart hit a two-run shot to left.

The Bison left their final seven runners on base, including runners on second and third in the sixth and eighth innings, helping North Dakota to the 3-2 win.

North Dakota State is scheduled to host Winnipeg (Canada) at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo for a three-game non-conference series Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11. The Bison and Wesmen are slated to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday before closing out the series Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
