FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University men's track & field team will attempt to capture its seventh consecutive Summit League outdoor team title at the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Vermillion, S.D., on May 12-14. The three-day meet will be hosted by the University of South Dakota at Lillibridge Track Complex.
Since joining The Summit League prior to the 2008 season, NDSU has won seven of a possible eight team titles in outdoor track & field. The Bison won the championship in their first shot in 2008, and then again each year from 2010-15.
Last season, NDSU recorded the fourth-highest point total in league history on its way to a sixth straight title. The Bison won with 266.5 points – the highest score since Southern Utah in 2007 before NDSU joined the league. South Dakota finished second with 199 points.
The Bison are joined by Oregon, Liberty and Albany as the only four Division I schools to own current winning streaks of six or more outdoor conference titles.
The Bison return four defending league champions in Landon Jochim (400m), Parker McKittrick (110m hurdles), Alex Renner (shot put & hammer throw) and Matti Mortimore (javelin). Renner was named the Championships Field MVP one year ago.
NDSU will enter this week's meet with the league's top performers in six events this season, including in all four throwing events with Renner (shot put), Mortimore (javelin), Conrad Schwarzkopf (hammer throw) and Payton Otterdahl (discus). Senior Brock Larson leads the league in the decathlon, and senior Jerome Begin tops the performance list in the 400m hurdles.
The Bison men will look to score big in the throwing events once again this year. Last season, NDSU scored 114 of a possible 156 points in the throws – meaning all other schools combined for just 42 points. This year, the Bison enter with six of the league's top seven performers in the shot put, plus the top four in the league in the hammer and javelin.
Men's competition begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the decathlon 100m dash.
