VERMILLION, S.D. – The North Dakota State women's track & field team got off to a strong start on the first day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships, winning two event titles and posting top-three finishes in each of the events contested on Thursday.
NDSU leads the women's team race with 74 points, and South Dakota is second with 58.
Bison senior Sierra Rosenau captured her third consecutive Summit League title in the javelin, setting a meet record at 163-11 (49.96m). NDSU junior Katelyn Weimerskirch won her first conference title in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 184-4 (56.20m).
The Bison women scored 54 points across the two throwing events held on Thursday – 28 in the hammer throw and 26 in the javelin.
NDSU took six of the top eight places in the hammer, finishing 1-2-5-6-7-8 with Weimerskirch, Shelby Gunnells, Courtney Pasiowitz, Jordyn Thornton, Hannah Frost and Maddy Nilles. Gunnells, a freshman from Solon, Iowa, was the runner-up with a personal-best 183-2 (55.84m) that ranks her sixth in NDSU history.
Behind Rosenau in the javelin, NDSU had four more placewinners with sophomore Alyssa Olin third and freshmen Keyawna Larson, Nilles and Gunnells in fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Larson threw a personal-best 149-8 (45.61m) to rank third all-time at NDSU, and in only her second time ever throwing javelin, Nilles registered a mark of 140-3 (42.76m) to rank eighth in NDSU history.
Freshman Emma Kusch Dahle was the Summit League runner-up in the 10,000m, finishing in 36:19.09 to rank seventh all-time at NDSU. Senior Brecca Wahlund ran in her first track meet in three years, taking seventh place in the 10k.
Senior Brittany Stangl finished third in the pole vault, and Anna Benke took fifth. Both cleared an outdoor personal-best of 13-03.75 (4.06m), tying them for second on the school's all-time list. The pair also likely earned bids to the NCAA West Prelims in the event.
