FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women's track & field team will target its ninth straight outdoor crown and its 18th straight team title overall this week at the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Vermillion, S.D. The three-day meet will be hosted by the University of South Dakota at Lillibridge Track Complex on May 12-14.
Since the Bison joined The Summit League prior to the 2008 season, there have been 17 league championship track & field meets. All 17 trophies have been captured by the Bison.
Only one women's track & field program in NCAA Division I owns a longer active streak of outdoor titles than NDSU – Jacksonville University of the Atlantic Sun Conference with 10. The Bison women totaled a record 282 points on the way to the team championships last year, winning by a 73-point margin over second-place South Dakota.
The Bison women enter this week's meet with the league's top mark in 10 events this season, led by Erin Teschuk (1500m, 5000m) and Katelyn Weimerskirch (discus, hammer throw) who top the charts in a pair of events. Seven of NDSU's league leaders are also defending champions in their respective events.
A trio of NDSU women will be targeting their third consecutive individual title in an event – Teschuk in the 3000m steeplechase, Weimerskirch in the discus, and Sierra Rosenau in the javelin.
In every event in which they have competed this season, the Bison women have an athlete ranked among the league's top eight. In 18 of the 21 events, NDSU's top performer enters the league meet ranked among the top five.
In 2015, the Bison women racked up 106 of a possible 156 points in the throws at the league meet, sweeping the top two places in all four throwing events. NDSU looks poised for similar success this year, entering the meet with three of the top four performers in the shot put, hammer and javelin.
Women's competition begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday with the hammer throw.
