Bison Women Begin NCAA West Prelims at Kansas Thursday

The North Dakota State University women's track & field team will send 16 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with a total of 17 entries, once again marking the largest contingent of national qualifiers in the school's Division I history. The meet will be hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., on May 26-28.
The previous high in qualifiers for the Bison women was 13, achieved last season.

Thursday, May 26
12 p.m. – Javelin – Sierra Rosenau, Alyssa Olin, Keyawna Larson
4 p.m. – Hammer throw – Katelyn Weimerskirch, Hannah Frost
4:30 p.m. – 400m hurdles – Melissa Kitching, Morgan Milbrath
Friday, May 27
12 p.m. – Discus – Katelyn Weimerskirch, Maddy Nilles
5 p.m. – Pole vault – Brittany Stangl, Anna Benke
5 p.m. – High jump – Ann Govig
7:30 p.m. – 400m hurdles (quarterfinals)
8:50 p.m. – 3,000m steeplechase – Erin Teschuk

How to Advance
The top 12 finishers in each event at the Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 8-11.
In the discus, shot put, javelin and hammer throw, all 48 competitors will receive a single round of three attempts. The top 12 marks overall advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the 400m hurdles, the top three finishers from each heat plus the next six fastest times (24) will advance to the quarterfinals. The top three finishers from each quarterfinal heat plus the next three fastest times (12) will advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the high jump and pole vault, the top 12 athletes based on performance after tiebreakers and possibly a jump-off will qualify for the NCAA Championships.
In the 3,000m steeplechase, the top three from three quarterfinal heats, plus the next three fastest times (12), advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the 4x400m relay, the top three teams from three quarterfinal heats, plus the next three fastest times (12), advance to the NCAA Championships.
A League of Their Own
There are 42 schools from the Power 5 conferences (SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC) that have fewer than the 17 national entries of the Bison women.
Top Throws Program
The Bison women lead the country with 10 entries in the throwing events at the NCAA Prelims. Texas A&M has the second-most with nine. The NDSU men and women combined for 25 entries in the throwing events at the NCAA Prelims, and no other school in the country has more than 14.
Record-Breaking
NDSU is sending a record number of women to the NCAA Preliminary Rounds for the fourth straight year.
