Rutgers Tops NDSU 6-5 at USF Spring Classic

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Rutgers rallied for a 6-5 win over North Dakota State on Sunday, March 19 to close out play at the USF Spring Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Sports Complex.

NDSU (10-20) is scheduled to open up a three-game series at Georgia Tech (9-17) at noon Saturday, March 25 in Atlanta. The Bison look to snap a six-game losing streak.

North Dakota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Madyson Camacho walked, stole second and scored on Vanessa Anderson's RBI single left.

The Bison did their scoring with two outs in the top of the third to extend the lead to 4-0. Stavrou hit a RBI double to right center, Anderson followed with a run-scoring single to center and Bre Beatty belted a RBI double to left. Anderson and Beatty both had two hits.

Rutgers (6-19) stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3. Nicole Bowman and Nicolette Anico both hit run-scoring triples. Anico scored on a wild pitch.

The Scarlet Knights took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Rebecca Hall led off with a home run, while a Meaghan Wells' fielder's choice and Dana Hendry ground out produced runs.

NDSU cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the seventh. Stephanie Soriano led off with a double, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Stavrou ground out. Stavrou finished with two RBI.

Jacquelyn Sertic (8-15) took the loss for NDSU. Sertic allowed eight hits, struck out six and walked one.

Shayla Sweeney and Whitney Jones pitched for Rutgers with Jones picking up the win. The pair combined to allow seven hits, strike out two and walk two. Carly Todd led the Scarlet Knights with double and triple.
