SCENE SETTER: The North Dakota State University baseball team (29-23) is scheduled to open play in the 2017 Summit League Baseball Championship on Wednesday, May 24, at noon against South Dakota State (25-22) at Oral Roberts' J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Okla. The Bison enter the tournament as the two seed -- the highest seed in program history, while the Jackrabbits are the three seed. The other first round game slated for Wednesday at 6 p.m. features top-seeded Oral Roberts (39-14) and fourth-seeded Western Illinois (18-30).
MEDIA COVERAGE: All North Dakota State Summit League tournament games will air live on Bison 1660, 92.7 FM, Bison1660.com and the Bison 1660 app with Jeff Culhane (play-by-play) and Keith Brake (color commentator) on the call. NDSU IN THE SUMMIT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT: North Dakota State has an all-time record of 8-8 in Summit League tournament competition dating back to its first appearance during the 2011 season. This is the sixth tournament appearance in seven seasons for the Bison. NDSU did not qualify for the tournament last season. North Dakota State captured their first-ever Summit League tournament championship in 2014.
SERIES RECORDS: South Dakota State: Wednesday's game will mark the 179th meeting in the all-time series that dates back to 1956. SDSU leads the series, 113-65. The Bison went 4-2 against the Jacks this season, winning two of three games in Fargo and on the road in Brookings ... Oral Roberts: This would be the 41st meeting in the all-time series that dates back to 2008. ORU leads the series, 28-12. NDSU went 2-4 against the Golden Eagles this season, dropping three games in Tulsa before winning two of three contests in Fargo ... Western Illinois: This would mark the 59th meeting in the all-time series that dates back to 2005. WIU leads the series, 31-27. NDSU went 5-1 against the Leathernecks this season, winning two of three games on the road in Macomb, Ill., before sweeping Western Illinois in Fargo.

TURNING TWO: In NDSU's 30 Summit League games, the Bison turned a league-best 32 double plays. NDSU also leads the league in overall double plays and ranks 49th in the latest NCAA Division I national statistics with a North Dakota State single-season record 48 double plays in 52 games.
PRODUCTIVE OUTS: The Bison rank second in The Summit League with 26 sacrifice flies in 52 games. The 26 sac flies ties the North Dakota State single-season record, which was set in 1994 and matched in 2011 and 2012.
SWING AND A MISS: The Bison pitching staff ranks second in The Summit League in batters struck out at 370 in 52 games. The 370 strikeouts are the third most in NDSU single-season history. Individually, senior RHP Luke Lind leads the league and ranks fourth in program single-season history with 85 strikeouts entering Wednesday.
STELLAR WEEKEND: Senior catcher Danny Palmiscno hit a team-best .571 with four hits, three runs scored, a double, five RBIs, and a .667 on-base and .714 slugging percentage in NDSU's three-game series at Fort Wayne May 18-20. The Grand Forks native went a career-best 3-for-3 at the plate in the Bison's 11-0 win against the Mastodons May 18.
ABERCROMBIE'S RECORD WEEKEND: Sophomore outfielder Alec Abercrombie tied the NDSU single-game record with four walks in the Bison's game at Fort Wayne Saturday, May 19. During the three-game series with the Mastodons, he hit .500 with three doubles, five RBIs, five walks, a run scored and stolen base. He added a 1.000 slugging and .727 on-base percentage.
SURGING DOWN THE STRETCH: Junior infielder Drew Fearing is on a team-best 10 game hitting and on-base streak entering Wednesday's tournament contest. In hit last six games, the Osakis, Minn., native is hitting .409 with nine hits, three runs, one double, one RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
PALMISCNO AMONG FIELDING CAREER LEADERS: Danny Palmiscno ranks second in NDSU career fielding percentage at .993 entering tournament play.
PITCHING CONSISTENCY: Senior right-handed pitcher Reed Pfannenstein is a perfect 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his last eight starts. During that stretch, he has allowed only 10 earned runs on 42 hits with 33 strikeouts and 18 walks in 56 2/3 innings pitched. Pfannenstein was named Summit League Pitcher of the Week after tossing his first career complete-game shutout in the Bison's 8-0 victory over Western Illinois May 13. Entering The Summit League tournament, he ranks fifth in NDSU career innings pitched at 215 2/3 innings and fourth in career starts at 39.
WALK THIS WAY: In the latest Summit League statistics, the Bison have two players ranked in the top 10 in walks. Junior outfielder Logan Busch is fourth in the league with a North Dakota State single-season record 33 free passes, while Ben Petersen is sixth with 31 walks. As a team, North Dakota State is tied for third in The Summit League with 199 walks.
POWER SURGE: Senior designated hitter JT Core is hitting .429 with nine hits, five runs, two doubles and four RBIs in his last six games. Entering The Summit League tournament, the Leavenworth, Kan., native is on a seven game hitting and on-base streak.
SCORCHING AT THE PLATE: Freshman shortstop Bennett Hostetler is hitting .386 with 22 hits, 12 runs, two home runs, two doubles, a triple, and 10 RBIs in his last 13 games.
TOUGH OUT: Junior infielder Mason Pierzchalski ranks 42nd on the list of toughest players to strikeout in the latest NCAA Division I statistics. Pierzchalski has only struck out 16 times in 203 at bats (12.7 average).
CLOSING THE DOOR: NDSU right-handed closer Kevin Folman leads the team and is second in The Summit League with eight saves in 20 relief appearances. The Hermantown, Minn., native has allowed only eight earned runs on 20 hits with 21 strikeouts and six walks in 25.0 innings.
TAKE YOUR BASE: Two Bison rank in the top 10 in The Summit League in hit batters. Drew Fearing is tied for second in hit by pitch at 10, while Danny Palmiscno has been hit eight times, tying him for eighth in the league. The Bison have been hit 46 times through 52 games.
NATIONAL HONORS: Senior right-handed pitcher Luke Lind was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week for May 1 after tossing a one-hit complete-game shutout with a career-high 11 strikeouts in NDSU's 3-0 win at South Dakota State April 28.
SUMMIT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mason Pierzchalski (Feb. 19), Ben Petersen (March 6), Luke Lind (March 13, May 1) and Reed Pfannenstein (May 15) have received Summit League Player of the Week honors this season.
EIGHT CONSECUTIVE 20-WIN SEASONS: North Dakota State has reached the 20-win mark eight straight seasons. The Bison have qualified for six Summit League tournaments, winning the tournament championship in 2014. This is NDSU's 10th season in The Summit League after three seasons as a Division I independent.
THE COACH: Tod Brown (Arizona, 1994) enters his 10th season as the head coach for the Bison and has a 242-271 record at NDSU. Brown previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons at Bowling Green, where he was part of two division titles and a regular-season title in the Mid-American Conference. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1999 as a volunteer assistant at Arizona. He was a left-handed pitcher for the Wildcats under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Kindall and a member of the 1992 Pac-10 champs.
