NDSU Softball Adds Marshall University Transfer Sam Koehn to Roster

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State University head softball coach Darren Mueller announced today the addition of Marshall University transfer, infielder Sam Koehn, who has been admitted to NDSU and will join the program for the 2018-19 season. She will have three years of eligibility remaining.
 
"We welcome Sam to our Bison softball family," said Mueller. "Sam's athleticism along with her strong arm will allow her to be a versatile player for us. Her passion and drive on the field and in the classroom is a big asset for us."
 
Koehn joins four other newcomers -- shortstop Cameryn Maykut (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Shaftesbury H.S.), pitcher Paige Vargas (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Santa Margarita Catholic H.S.), catcher-outfielder Avery Wysong (Beaver Creek, Minn. / Hills-Beaver Creek H.S.) and middle infielder Nicole Licea (Corona,Calif. / Hillcrest H.S.).
 
"I appreciate the culture and strong sense of community in Fargo," said Koehn. "You can really tell that this city rallies around its athletes."

   FRESHMAN (Marshall University): Started 28 of 31 games played for Marshall in 2018, including 21 starts at third base … The Thundering Herd finished with 25-29-1 record overall including 13-9-1 in Conference USA … Had .192 batting average with nine runs scored, a pair of doubles, five stolen bases and seven RBI … Fielded .944 with four errors in 73 fielding chances … Drove in two runs in Herd's 9-6 extra-inning win at UAB (March 10) … Conference USA Academic Medalist and Commissioner's Honor Roll.
   HIGH SCHOOL: Starter at second base for Bondurant-Farrar High School's 2013 Class 3A state championship team as a freshman … Named to all-state tournament team … Hit .311 with 34 runs scored, seven doubles and 15 RBI … Played basketball and competed in track & field, qualifying for the Drake Relays and state meet in the 4x100 meter relay … Member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
   SUMMER LEAGUE: Played for the successful Iowa Blitz summer team coached by Adam DeCamp from 2013-2017 … During 2017 season, compiled .432 batting average with three home runs and 34 RBI … Contributed 29 runs scored, 14 stolen bases, eight doubles and four triples … Teammates with current NDSU shortstop Montana DeCamp.
   PERSONAL: Daughter of Jake and Mandy Koehn … Has one brother, Jonah … Athletic family tree includes father, Jake, who played football at Simpson College … Cousin, Marshall Koehn, was a placekicker for Iowa and currently with the New York Giants (NFL stops include Miami, Minnesota and Cincinnati) … Cousin, Kelsey Robinson, played volleyball for Nebraska and member of 2016 U.S. Olympic Team … College major in exercise science with a minor in psychology.
 
North Dakota State (34-19) claimed the program's ninth Summit League tournament championship, eighth regular season title and won a NCAA tournament game for the fifth straight season and sixth time over the past seven seasons.
