FORT WAYNE, Ind. – North Dakota State first baseman Vanessa Anderson hit a grand slam in the seventh inning as the Bison pulled away for a 7-0 win on Sunday, March 24, at Purdue Fort Wayne to complete a Summit League sweep. NDSU extended its winning streak to 11 games.
NDSU (21-11, 3-0 SL) is scheduled to play a three-game league series at Western Illinois (6-14, 0-2 SL) on March 30-31 in Macomb.
Anderson's grand slam broke open a pitcher's duel and provided NDSU some cushion. Anderson connected on a 2-1 pitch and sent the ball over the right center fence. It was Anderson's third home run of the series and fifth of the season. The Bison hit eight home runs over the three games.
Purdue Fort Wayne (5-19, 0-3 SL) and pitcher Lauren McConnell kept within striking distance. McConnell worked around eight hits and six walks, while striking out five. Morgan Denny led the Mastodons with two hits.
North Dakota State scored first when Maddie Hansen led off the fourth inning with a solo home run down the left field line, her team-leading sixth of the season. Zoe Stavrou's ground out pushed Montana DeCamp across the plate in the fifth inning and put the Bison ahead 2-0.
Stephanie Soriano singled through the left side to score Katie Shoultz with two outs in the seventh to make it 3-0 before Anderson's blast. Hansen and Shoultz both finished with two hits.
KK Leddy (11-6) scattered six hits, struck out eight and walked one to record her fifth shutout of the season.
