NDSU Shuts Down South Dakota 2-0, 10-0 in Summit League Doubleheader

VERMILLION, S.D. – KK Leddy and Paige Vargas threw back-to-back one-hitters and Maddie Hansen collected five RBI on the day as North Dakota State defeated South Dakota 2-0 in eight innings and 10-0 in five innings to complete a Summit League doubleheader road sweep on Friday, April 19, at Nygaard Field. The Bison regained first place in the league standings with the two wins.
NDSU (32-12, 10-1 SL) and South Dakota (30-20, 11-3 SL) are scheduled to close out the three-game series at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20.
North Dakota State rallied with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning in the first game. Montana DeCamp and Katie Shoultz singled to start the rally, and moved up into scoring position on a Stephanie Soriano sacrifice bunt. Maddie Hansen lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score DeCamp and Cara Beatty followed with two-out RBI single to right to send Shoultz home and put the Bison ahead 2-0. Beatty had two hits.
KK Leddy (17-7) retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the one-hitter for her eighth shutout of the season. Leddy struck out six and walked two on 107 pitches.
South Dakota starter Alexis Devers matched Leddy pitch-by-pitch. Devers allowed seven hits, struck out three and issued now walks. Jamie Holscher had a first inning single for USD.
North Dakota State rode the momentum into the second game. Soriano came up with a RBI single to score DeCamp with the first run in the top of the third, then Hansen launched her ninth home run of the season to left center, a two-run shot, for a 3-0 lead.
NDSU batted around and exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 9-0. DeCamp started things with a sacrifice fly, a Soriano ground out produced the second run and Hansen singled through the left side to push two runs across. The Bison took advantage of an error to tally another pair of runs.
North Dakota State finished with 11 hits. Hansen went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Beatty had a double and single, while Shoultz added a pair of base hits. Camacho hit a triple and DeCamp collected a double.
Paige Vargas (12-4) claimed her second straight shutout and fourth overall. Vargas struck out five, walked two and allowed a single to Ashtyn Blakeman in the second inning.
Dustie Durham (12-8) and Sarah Lisko pitched for South Dakota with Durham taking the loss. The pair combined to strike out four and walk three.
