Fired up Drake Eliminates NDSU at NCAA Regional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Drake University came out swinging and defeated North Dakota State 8-0 in five-innings in an elimination game at the NCAA Minneapolis Regional played Saturday, May 18, before a crowd of 994 at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
North Dakota State finishes the season with a 42-16 record.
Drake (43-15) scored two runs in each of the first three innings. A bases-loaded walk and Nicole Newman sacrifice fly pushed across runs in the first inning, Kennedy Frank laced a two-out, two-run triple to the left center gap in the second and Libby Ryan hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the third and the Bulldogs led 6-0.
Meanwhile Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Nicole Newman struck out the first seven NDSU hitters she faced and retired the first nine in order. Newman struck out 13 and issued no walks to notch her 14th shutout of the season and improve to 29-7 overall.
Katie Shoultz ended perfect game talk, leading off the fourth with a single through the left side on a 1-2 pitch.
Taryn Pena hit her eighth home run, a shot over the left field fence, with two out in the bottom of the fourth.
Paige Vargas (17-5) and Kara O'Byrne pitched for NDSU with Vargas taking the loss.
