NDSU Baseball Downs Hawaii 3-1 in Season Opener

HONOLULU, HAWAII - The North Dakota State baseball team scored three runs over the final three innings Friday night, as the Bison beat Hawaii 3-1 in the season opener. The victory was the fifth-straight victory in a season opener for the Bison.
NDSU improved to 1-0 on the year, while Hawaii dropped to 2-1. The two teams will square off again on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. central time in Honolulu.
Zach Smith earned the victory on the mound, tossing three innings in relief. Smith struck out three and allowed just one hit, as he improved to 5-5 in his career. Reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year Max Loven took a no-decision in the start, striking out six and allowing an earned run on six hits and a walk in six innings of work.
Jack Simonsen was 2-for-3, while Peter Brookshaw, Bennett Hostetler, Charley Hesse and Nick Emanuel each added a hit.
Hawaii scored its lone run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly. Hostetler tied the game in the seventh, as he scored on a wild pitch. With two outs in the eighth, Brookshaw singled to right field to bring in Jake Malec for the go-ahead run. NDSU added an insurance run in the ninth, as Hesse scored on a sacrifice fly from Simonsen.
