FARGO, N.D. – Alicia Nead gave the Bison a victory with a 90th minute winner on Homecoming and Senior Day, as North Dakota State defeated rival North Dakota 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Dacotah Field.
Olivia Lovick took possession of the ball on a clearance in the defensive half and spun past a defender to start a counter attack for North Dakota State (2-7-1, 2-1-0 Summit League) in the 90th minute of a 1-1 game. Lovick ran with the ball and Nead joined the attack, making it a 2-on-1 break toward the Fighting Hawks (3-7-1, 1-2-0 Summit) goal.
Lovick passed the ball to Nead at the top of the penalty area, and Nead chipped the keeper to score with 38 seconds left, essentially giving the Bison the victory. It was the first career goal for Nead, as the sophomore had just one assist to her tally with the Bison.
While the game finished with a quick break for the Bison, it also started that way. Senior Brookelyn Dew started off senior day with her first goal of the season in the second minute.
The Bison went on a quick break down the right wing, as freshman Loretta Wacek played a cross in from near the corner that settled to the feet of Jess Hanley. Hanley, without much of a chance to shoot with her back facing goal, passed out to Dew, who finished with her left foot, beating Madi Livingston to give the hosts an early lead.
For Dew, it was her seventh career goal, second among active Bison. It was also her 19th career point, which is tied for the active lead with Lovick, who recorded an assist on the winning goal.
With the secondary assist on the first goal, Wacek secured her first career point for the Bison.
The Bison would take some initial pressure from the Fighting Hawks in response to the early Bison goal, as UND responded with eight shots in the first half. However, the Bison kept North Dakota's shots to mostly long-range efforts, with Sofia Howe making four comfortable saves in the opening 45 minutes to preserve the one-goal lead.
North Dakota State would have three more chances in the first half, forcing two saves from Livingston and missing just high on a third attempt.
In the second half, both teams would have chances with Howe adding four more saves. However, the visitors would strike back with an equalizer in the 76th minute, as Mara Yapello scored off of a corner kick.
Irene Jirasevijinda played the corner to the back post, where Yapello jumped up and headed the ball back across goal and into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams would have threatening opportunities in the final 15 minutes before the Bison picked up the winner.
Howe finished the game with eight saves overall, the third most in her career.
Senior Danielle Algera moved into the top 10 in career games played for the Bison, as she stepped onto the field for the 78th time as a Bison. She is four games from second on the all-time Bison list.
Fellow senior Ellie Schneider continued her 100 percent record for playing time this season, as she was one of five players that played all 90 minutes for the Bison. Schneider has played all 935 minutes this season.
Along with Dew, Algera and Schneider, fellow seniors Aly Cole and Lauryn Roszak were all recognized as part of senior day festivities following the game.
Statistically, North Dakota led in shots 16-10 and shots on goal 9-4. Livingston had just two saves for UND. The Fighting Hawks would have a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
North Dakota State is set to hit the road for the first time this season in Summit League play, as the Bison will travel south to Brookings for the first of two games next week in South Dakota. NDSU will take on South Dakota State on Friday, October 15. Kickoff between the Bison and Jackrabbits is slated for 6 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
