BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota State soccer team fell to Summit League leading South Dakota State 3-0 Friday evening at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Bison (2-8-1, 2-2 Summit) looked strong early and had the only shot on target in the opening 43 minutes of play, with an effort from
Olivia Lovick saved in the 41
st minute. However, the hosts would capitalize on a set piece opportunity less than two minutes before the break to take a lead they never relinquished.
South Dakota State's (13-1-1, 4-0-1 Summit) Karlee Manding won a free kick about 10 yards outside the penalty area. Kaitlin Zabel would send the free kick into the box where it was headed past Bison goalkeeper
Sofia Howe by Marisa Schulz to put the Jackrabbits in front.
The Jackrabbits would double their lead in the 61
st minute. After a corner kick was cleared to the left wing by the Bison, Katherine Jones would send a cross into the box that was settled by Maya Hansen, who then fired a shot into the top left corner for the game's second goal.
Loretta Wacek would test SDUS's Jocelyn Tanner, forcing a save from the Jackrabbit goalkeeper in the 70
th minute with the final shot attempt of the game for NDSU.
South Dakota State added the final goal in the 88
th minute, as Avery Murdzek found Cecilia Limongi in the center of the box with a pass from the end line and Limongi beat Howe with a shot into the bottom left corner.
Howe would finish the game with two saves, while the Bison were outshot 15-3 in the contest. South Dakota State had seven corners to just one for the Bison.
The Bison will remain in South Dakota, traveling to Vermillion to take on the University of South Dakota on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.
