BROOKINGS, S.D. - North Dakota State scored two runs in the ninth and two runs in the 10th on Saturday, earning a doubleheader split with South Dakota State in the final games of a Summit League baseball series. The Jacks won the first game 12-2 in eight innings before NDSU took the series finale 13-12 in 10 innings.

The Bison are 25-12 overall and 14-9 in Summit League play, while the Jackrabbits are 11-21 overall and 6-10 in league play. With just two Summit League series remaining for the Bison, NDSU sits in second place behind Oral Roberts and ahead of Omaha. The Bison have played 12 more league games than Oral Roberts and 11 more than Omaha. NDSU is scheduled to host Valley City State on Tuesday, April 27 at Newman Outdoor Field. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.

Jack Simonsen led the Bison with three hits in the opener, while Bennett Hostetler, Charley Hesse and Hunter Koep each had a pair. Hostetler became the fifth player in school history to appear in 200 or more career games. Ben Smith suffered the loss on the mound, as he allowed 10 runs on 12 hits and four walks in 4.2 innings, while tallying five strikeouts. Smith dropped to 6-3 on the year. Zach Smith (two), Shea Zetterman and Thomas Bruchu each recorded a strikeout.

NDSU took an early lead as Simonsen doubled down the right field line to bring in Hesse in the second inning. SDSU tied the game with a solo home run in the third before scoring four runs in the fourth. Simonsen scored on an error in the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 5-2. SDSU answered with five runs in the fifth before scoring two in the eighth for the win.

Peter Brookshaw, Hostetler, Hesse and Calen Schwabe each had two hits in the nightcap. Hostetler drove in a career-high five runs, while Simonsen and Schwabe each brought in two. Hostetler scored three runs, with Hesse, Will Busch and Simonsen each crossing the plate twice. Evan Sankey had a no-decision in the start, allowing five runs (Four earned) on nine hits and two walks in 4.1 innings, while striking out seven. Gabe Pilla picked up the win in 2.2 innings of work, striking out four. Wyatt Nelson earned his seventh save of the season in the final inning with a strikeout.

SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the first, but NDSU tied the game in the second on a double by Nick Emanuel that scored Hesse. The Jacks used a pair of home runs in the third and an RBI single in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. A two-run home run by Simonsen in the fifth cut the lead to 5-3, but SDSU scored again in the fifth to extend it. In the sixth inning, Hesse doubled to bring in Hostetler before Tucker Rohde scored on a throwing error by the catcher on ball four to Busch. Schwabe then singled to left field to bring in Busch and Hesse, as the Bison took a 7-5 lead. In the seventh, Hostetler homered down the right field line to bring in Brookshaw, extending the NDSU lead to 9-5. SDSU answered with five runs in the seventh, taking a 10-9 lead. SDSU added an RBI double in the eighth to take an 11-9 lead. With one out in the ninth, Hostetler blasted a home run, driving in Malec, to tie the game. It was the second career multi home run game for Hostetler. In extra innings, Brookshaw singled to bring in Simonsen before Schwabe scored on a sacrifice fly by Hostetler. With NDSU leading 13-11 in the 10th, the Jacks scored a run and had the bases loaded before Nelson recorded a strikeout with a full count.
