FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State Bison softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday with the University of North Dakota, falling 11-10 and winning 7-3 at Tharaldson Park.
In games that were originally scheduled to be played in Grand Forks, North Dakota (14-35, 4-13 Summit League) played as the home team and struck first in game one, scoring three in the bottom of the first with two coming by way of an NDSU (26-20, 8-7 Summit League) error.
The Bison would respond as
Skylar Padgett hit her second home run of the season with a grand slam to give NDSU the lead in the second. UND would answer with another run in the bottom half before
Reanna Rudd hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to put NDSU back in front 6-4.
The Bison would have two more home runs in the game as
Avery Wysong hit a solo shot in the fourth and Rudd hit her second home run of the game in the fifth.
UND would answer back with a four run fifth to take a 9-8 lead. The Bison would retake the lead with a two-RBI single from
Cameryn Maykut, but UND scored two in the bottom of the sixth and held the Bison scoreless in the seventh to win the opener.
In game two,
Lainey Lyle would dominate much of the game, limiting the Fighting Hawks to just one hit until the seventh inning. Lyle would match a career high with 10 strikeouts in the game.
The NDSU offense would be held scoreless until the fifth inning when
Emilee Buringa hit a two-RBI single to put the Bison in front. Buringa would score later in the inning on a
Dez Cardenas RBI single.
In the sixth, Wysong would hit her second home run of the day with a solo shot and the Bison would add another run on an error from UND. Wysong would then draw a bases loaded walk and the Bison would score another run on a double play in the seventh to go up 7-0.
UND would add three in the bottom of the seventh, but NDSU held on for the split.
The Bison will return to action on Friday and Saturday as NDSU hosts St. Thomas in a three-game series to wrap up regular season play. First pitch in the doubleheader on Friday is slated for noon at Tharaldson Park.
