PHOENIX – Arizona State used a walk-off home run to edge the North Dakota State baseball team, 10-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Phoenix Muni Stadium.
Peter Brookshaw set the tone with a home run in his first at-bat of the game to left field to make the score 1-0 in the first inning. The Bison (1-8) continued to apply pressure adding on five runs on four hits in the third to stretch their advantage to 6-0.
Druw Sackett got the big frame started with an RBI single before Brookshaw smashed a two-run home run.
Terrell Huggins capped the inning with a two-run home run of his own into left center.
After Sackett added an RBI single in the fourth, Arizona State (6-2) responded with six runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit down to one, 7-6. The Sun Devils, who entered the week receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches' Poll, then stole the lead after Jacob Tobias connected on a home run to right center to make the score 8-7 in the fifth inning.
Cadyn Schwabe answered for NDSU in the eighth knocking an RBI triple into right center to lock the contest, 8-8. The Sun Devils quickly responded in the bottom of the eighth with one more run after a ground out to regain the edge, 9-8.
Terrell Huggins then came up with a clutch double into left field in the ninth to tie the game, 9-9. However, Will Rogers used a walk-off home run to left field to win the contest for the Sun Devils, 10-9.
The Bison tallied 11 hits as a team with six different players contributing at least one. Brookshaw led way with three RBI, two home runs and two runs. Huggins notched a game-high three hits, including two doubles and one home run. The Tuscon, Ariz., native also contributed three RBI and one run.
Carson Jacobs made his first career start and logged two strikeouts over 3.0 innings.
Skyler Riedinger (0-1) picked up the loss finishing the final 2.1 innings with one strikeout.
NDSU will be back in action at Arizona on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
