NDSU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Houston Christian

HOUSTON, Texas – The North Dakota State baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader, 10-7, and, 6-5, at Husky Field on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, NDSU (3-16) overcame an early three run deficit to pick up a 10-7 win over Houston Christian (1-17). The Huskies got off to a 3-0 start in the third frame with a three-run home run off the bat of Samuel Benjamin. The Bison then erupted for six runs on four hits in the fourth inning capped off by Druw Sackett singling into right field and advancing to second on an error to allow Peter Brookshaw and Terrell Huggins to score unearned runs to steal the lead, 6-3.

Houston Christian answered in the bottom half connecting on five hits to push across four runs to regain the edge, 7-6, after four innings. Kyle Law locked the contest back up, 7-7, in the fifth sending a single up the middle to score Will Busch.

The Bison kept the momentum going into the seventh stealing the lead, 8-7, after Huggins drove an RBI single into left. Sackett followed it up reaching on a fielding error to allow Huggins and Cadyn Schwabe to score unearned runs to seal the 10-7 win.

The Bison totaled 12 hits as a team with Brookshaw going 3-of-5 at the plate with one run. Law also tallied a team-best three RBI with two hits and one run.

Cade Feeney made the start on the mound going 4.0 innings with a team-best four strikeouts. Reese Ligtenberg (1-0) earned the win with one strikeout over 2.0 innings, while Skyler Riedinger picked up the save finishing the final frame.

In game two, NDSU picked up a 6-5 win over Houston Christian. Huggins got the Bison started ripping an RBI double into left to make the score 1-0. The Huskies responded in the bottom half after Benjamin delivered a two RBI double of his own into left to steal the lead, 2-1.

The game then went scoreless for three frames until Huggins sparked the Bison with a three-run home run to left to capture the lead, 4-2. Schwabe followed it up in the sixth with an RBI single to stretch the edge to 5-2. The Huskies battled back in the bottom half of the sixth after a home run from Parker Edwards and Damian Ruiz stealing home to cut the edge to 5-4.

Brookshaw added insurance for the Bison in the seventh scoring on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 6-4. The Huskies made one final surge in the seventh cutting the deficit down to one, 6-5, following a run scored on balk. However, NDSU went on to hold off Houston Christian over the final two frames to pick up the 6-5 victory.

The Bison tallied 10 hits as a team with seven different players contributing at least one. Schwabe paced NDSU going 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Huggins also added in a game-high four RBI with two hits and one run.

Max Loven (1-1) made the start and earned the win tossing three strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Joey Danielson threw a team-best four strikeouts over 1.1 innings, while Carson Jacobs earned the save with two strikeouts over 2.0 innings.

NDSU will conclude its series at Houston Christian tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
