NDSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State baseball team split a doubleheader at Omaha dropping the first game, 7-6, before winning the series finale, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Tal Anderson Field.

In game one, the Mavericks (7-10, 1-2 Summit) outlasted the Bison (5-18, 2-1 Summit), 7-6. After Omaha grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Mavericks pushed across three more runs on four hits to make the score 4-0 following RBI double from Eddie Satisky in the third frame. Omaha went on to add on one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to increase their advantage to 6-0 after a sacrifice fly from Matt Goetzmann.

The Bison responded in the sixth inning sending across four runs on five hits to pull back within two, 6-4. Jack Steil provided some energy for NDSU bouncing a two-run double off the wall before Cadyn Schwabe drove an RBI single into left. Terrell Huggins completed the big inning with an RBI single to score Kyle Law before getting tagged out advancing to second.

After the Mavericks plated a run of their own in the sixth, Druw Sackett kept the surge going with a two-run home run into left field in the seventh to pull the Bison back within one, 7-6. However, NDSU couldn't get anything going over the final two frames and dropped the contest, 7-6.

NDSU totaled 10 hits as a team with Steil leading the way with a team-best three on four appearances. He also added two RBI and one run to his stat line.

Max Loven (1-2) made the start going 3.1 innings on the mound. Wyatt Nelson appeared for 2.1 innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout, while Carson Jacobs finished the final 2.1 innings with a team-best three strikeouts.

In game two, NDSU topped Omaha, 7-2, to take the series. The Bison got off to a fast start scoring four runs on six hits in the opening frame to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. Steil sparked NDSU with a three-run home run to left field before Will Busch used an RBI double into left field to cap the big inning. Omaha responded with a run of their own in the bottom half to pull back within three, 4-1, following a sacrifice fly.

The game then went scoreless for two innings until Peter Brookshaw used an RBI ground out to stretch the edge to 5-1 in the fourth inning. Mike Boeve answered for the Mavericks once again in the fifth inning cutting edge back down to three, 5-2, with an RBI single. Brookshaw didn't waste any time in the sixth inning pushing the NDSU lead back up to four, 6-2, with a solo home run to right field. Brookshaw then put the game out of reach in the ninth with his second home run of the game to right field to seal the 7-2 victory.

The Bison connected on nine hits as a team. Brookshaw paced NDSU going 3-of-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs. He has now tied a career-high eight home runs this season and logged three games with multiple home runs.

Tristen Roehrich (1-4) picked up the win tossing two strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Skyler Riedinger closed out the final 3.0 innings with a game-high three strikeouts.
